Despite the expectation of a tighter market, CBOT wheat prices have still come under pressure this year. This is likely due to the fact that the US market is expected to be looser over 2024/25, with ending stocks this season estimated to grow 17% YoY to 815m bushels (22mt). However, European wheat prices have held up relatively better due to the EU crop falling to its lowest level since the 2007/08 season. Output is estimated to have fallen 9% YoY to less than 123mt. Weather conditions in winter 2023 weighed on EU plantings and yields have also not performed, which has hit output heavily. This has been largely driven by the EU’s largest producer, France. Another key producer which has seen a large decline in output this season is Russia. Production is estimated to have fallen 11% YoY to 81.5mt, the lowest level since 2021/22. A combination of frost and dry weather has led to a number of revisions to this season’s Russian crop. These large declines from Russia and the EU have been partly offset by increases or at least expected increases elsewhere. US wheat production is estimated to have grown around 9% YoY on the back of stronger yields. Meanwhile, Australian wheat output is also expected to see a strong recovery this season, growing 23% YoY to 32mt with a rebound in yields after last year’s poor performance. Aggregate global wheat production in 2024/25 will trend higher and despite marginal consumption growth, stocks are still forecast to edge lower. Winter wheat plantings in the northern hemisphere for next season are now complete, and we’re left with something of a mixed bag. The initial condition of the US winter wheat crop was not great in late October. It has, however, improved through November, with the last reading of this year rating 55% of the winter wheat crop in good-to-excellent condition compared to 50% last year. For 2025/26, there is expected to be little change in total US wheat area. However, assuming yields fall back towards a five-year average, the domestic crop would fall by around 10% YoY. Coupled with little change in both domestic and export demand would mean that US ending stocks edge lower in 2025/26. Following the poor EU crop this season, expectations of a recovery are expected for next season. Area is expected to grow, while yields being in line with the average should see the EU crop grow by 7% YoY to almost 132mt. Similarly, it appears Ukraine has seen stronger winter wheat plantings, which could see the total wheat harvest growing by around 9% YoY to 25mt. However, Russia is expected to see yet another poor crop. Dry weather through the autumn delayed plantings and as a result, area has also shrunk. This could see Russia’s wheat crop fall around 1.5% YoY to almost 80mt. Concerns over a small crop have seen the Russian government reduce its export quota to 11mt from 15 February to 30 June 2025, down from 29mt for the same period this year. The cut in the quota wasn’t too surprising given the poorer harvest this season and with prospects of another poor harvest. In addition, the government also raised the export duty for wheat. Our early forecasts for the 2025/26 season see a further decline in ending stocks, with them potentially falling to their lowest level in over a decade. As a result, we expect CBOT wheat prices to trend higher through 2025 and currently forecast prices to average $6/bu over the year. However, similar to other grains, trade tensions are a downside risk. In the 2024/25 season, a little over 40% of the US wheat crop is estimated to be exported (fairly similar to the proportion of the US soybean crop exported), while only around 15% of the US corn crop is exported. The large share of US wheat exported does leave the market vulnerable to an escalation in trade tensions. Around 11% of US wheat exports go to China, so US wheat is not as vulnerable as soybeans to escalation with China. However, US wheat is obviously more vulnerable in the case of a broader escalation in trade tensions. Mexico is the largest offtaker of US wheat, taking 17% of US wheat exports. Clearly, any retaliatory tariffs on agricultural exports the US faces for a potentially aggressive trade approach could weigh on US exports, leaving its domestic market with larger-than-expected ending stocks and removing some of the constructiveness for the US market. Vineyard Wind began reinstalling turbine blades on its turbines over the weekend for the first time since one blade broke off into the ocean earlier this year. Vineyard Wind and its turbine manufacturer, GE Vernova, resumed the blade installation on Saturday, installing three blades, according to Vineyard Wind and government officials. The construction marks the first blade work in five months after one doubled over and scattered thousands of pieces of debris into the water in July. Nantucket town officials, who have been closely following the development of offshore wind to the island’s south, notified residents Friday that construction would be starting the following day. On Monday, Vineyard Wind acknowledged the construction, saying it comes after the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, the federal agency that is investigating the blade failure, approved blade work under certain safety precautions in October. “Following a rigorous process including both extensive inspection, and optimization of new monitoring technology, an initial set of blades has fulfilled the conditions for installation,” Vineyard Wind spokesperson Craig Gilvarg said in a statement. Each turbine has three, football field-length blades attached to a nacelle. The nacelle sits atop a massive tower, bringing the turbine’s total height up to 837 feet tall. The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement previously said that Vineyard Wind needed to develop a root cause analysis to determine the cause of the blade failure, as the agency conducts its own investigation. GE Vernova has said the 107-meter blade had a manufacturing deviation that was not caught by its inspections. In a statement Monday, the bureau said it reviewed detailed data and engineering documents submitted by GE Vernova and Vineyard Wind, as well as an independent agent brought on to verify the details of installing three new blades. “After careful evaluation, BSEE has agreed to allow the companies to proceed with installation of these blades as part of an incremental, case-by-case approach,” the agency said. The bureau had previously only allowed work in other capacities, such as cable-laying and erecting towers . The planned 62-turbine wind farm situated about 14 miles south of the Vineyard has struggled to get back on its feet, having to send back more blades believed to have similar defects as the one that broke in July. When it was operating earlier this year, Vineyard Wind was the largest offshore wind farm in the country, sending 136 watts of power to the New England grid. Australia's new law, approved by its Parliament last week, is an attempt to swim against many tides of modern life — formidable forces like technology, marketing, globalization and, of course, the iron will of a teenager. And like efforts of the past to protect kids from things that parents believe they're not ready for, the nation's move is both ambitious and not exactly simple, particularly in a world where young people are often shaped, defined and judged by the online company they keep. The ban won't go into effect for another year. But how will Australia be able to enforce it? That's not clear, nor will it be easy. TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram have become so ingrained in young people's lives that going cold turkey will be difficult. Other questions loom. Does the ban limit kids' free expression and — especially for those in vulnerable groups — isolate them and curtail their opportunity to connect with members of their community? And how will social sites verify people's ages, anyway? Can't kids just get around such technicalities, as they so often do? This is, after all, the 21st century — an era when social media is the primary communications tool for most of those born in the past 25 years who, in a fragmented world, seek the common cultures of trends, music and memes. What happens when big swaths of that fall away? Is Australia's initiative a good, long-time-coming development that will protect the vulnerable, or could it become a well-meaning experiment with unintended consequences? The law will make platforms including TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, X and Instagram liable for fines of up to A$50 million ($33 million) for systemic failures to prevent children younger than 16 from holding accounts. “It’s clear that social media companies have to be held accountable, which is what Australia is trying to do,” said Jim Steyer, president and CEO of the nonprofit Common Sense Media. Other countries watching Australia Leaders and parents in countries around the world are watching Australia’s policy closely as many seek to protect young kids from the internet's dangerous corners — and, not incidentally, from each other. Most nations have taken different routes, from parental consent requirements to minimum age limits. Many child safety experts, parents and even teens who have waited to get on social media consider Australia's move a positive step. They say there’s ample reason to ensure that children wait. “What’s most important for kids, just like adults, is real human connection. Less time alone on the screen means more time to connect, not less," said Julie Scelfo, the founder of Mothers Against Media Addiction, or MAMA, a grassroots group of parents aimed at combatting the harms of social media to children. “I’m confident we can support our kids in interacting in any number of ways aside from sharing the latest meme.” The harms to children from social media have been well documented in the two decades since Facebook’s launch ushered in a new era in how the world communicates. Kids who spend more time on social media, especially when they are tweens or young teenagers, are more likely to experience depression and anxiety, according to multiple studies — though it is not yet clear if there is a causal relationship. What's more, many are exposed to content that is not appropriate for their age, including pornography and violence, as well as social pressures about body image and makeup. They also face bullying, sexual harassment and unwanted advances from their peers as well as adult strangers. Because their brains are not fully developed, teenagers, especially younger ones the law is focused on, are also more affected by social comparisons than adults, so even happy posts from friends can send them into a negative spiral. Many major initiatives, particularly those aimed at social engineering, can produce side effects — often unintended. Could that happen here? What, if anything, do kids stand to lose by separating kids and the networks in which they participate? Paul Taske, associate director of litigation at the tech lobbying group NetChoice, says he considers the ban “one of the most extreme violations of free speech on the world stage today" even as he expressed relief that the First Amendment prevents such law in the United States "These restrictions would create a massive cultural shift,” Taske said. “Not only is the Australian government preventing young people from engaging with issues they’re passionate about, but they’re also doing so even if their parents are OK with them using digital services," he said. "Parents know their children and their needs the best, and they should be making these decisions for their families — not big government. That kind of forcible control over families inevitably will have downstream cultural impacts.” David Inserra, a fellow for Free Expression and Technology, Cato Institute, called the bill “about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike” in a recent blog post. While Australia's law doesn't require “hard verification” such as an uploaded ID, he said, it calls for effective “age-assurance” that includes an array of ways companies can estimate someone's age. He said no verification system can ensure accuracy while also protecting privacy and not impacting adults in the process. Privacy advocates have also raised concerns about the law's effect on online anonymity, a cornerstone of online communications — and something that can protect teens on social platforms. “Whether it be religious minorities and dissidents, LGBTQ youth, those in abusive situations, whistleblowers, or countless other speakers in tricky situations, anonymous speech is a critical tool to safely challenge authority and express controversial opinions,” Inserra said. “But if every user of online platforms must first identify themselves, then their anonymity is at risk.” Parents in Britain and across Europe earlier this year organized on platforms such as WhatsApp and Telegram to promise not to buy smartphones for children younger than 12 or 13. This approach costs almost no money and requires no government enforcement. In the United States, some parents are keeping kids off social media either informally or as part of an organized campaign such as Wait Until 8th, a group that helps parents delay kids' access to social media and phones. This fall, Norway announced plans to ban kids under 15 from using social media, while France is testing a smartphone ban for kids under 15 in a limited number of schools — a policy that could be rolled out nationwide if successful. U.S. lawmakers have held multiple congressional hearings — most recently in January — on child online safety. Still, the last federal law aimed at protecting children online was enacted in 1998, six years before Facebook’s founding. In July, the U.S. Senate overwhelmingly passed legislation designed to protect children from dangerous online content, pushing forward with what would be the first major effort by Congress in decades to hold tech companies more accountable. But the Kids Online Safety Act has since stalled in the House. While several states have passed laws requiring age verification, those are stuck in court. Utah became the first state to pass laws regulating children’s social media use in 2023. In September, a judge issued the preliminary injunction against the law, which would have required social media companies to verify the ages of users, apply privacy settings and limit some features. NetChoice has also obtained injunctions temporarily halting similar laws in several other states. And last May, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said there is insufficient evidence to show social media is safe for kids. He urged policymakers to address the harms of social media the same way they regulate things like car seats, baby formula, medication and other products children use. Said Scelfo: “Why should social media products be any different? Kids may try to get around the restrictions — just like they do for alcohol, tobacco or drugs — but nobody is saying that because they try, we should give them unfettered access to them. Parents cannot possibly bear the entire responsibility of keeping children safe online, because the problems are baked into the design of the products. These are whether the key 1,600-point support level on the benchmark FBM KLCI would be able to hold, and if net buying by foreign investors would soon return to the local bourse. It is notable that after a period of strong sustained buying by foreign investors for most of the year up till the third quarter or so, this group of investors have just turned into net sellers in the year-to-date (y-t-d) period as of the end of last week. The strong net buying by foreign investors that was seen earlier in the year was unable to sustain following the recent re-election of Donald Trump as the incoming US president, who will be installed on Jan 20. “The trend of foreign net selling started following Trump’s re-election and this continues until today. “From an earlier figure of net foreign inflows of RM1.5bil at its y-t-d peak, we are now recording about RM1.6bil of net foreign outflows in the y-t-d period,” chief executive officer and founder of Tradeview Capital Ng Zhu Hann told StarBiz. “Trump’s recent rhetoric, which points to a stronger US dollar, has seen funds leaving emerging markets and this includes Malaysia back to the United States,” Ng added. The FBM KLCI climbed higher at its close yesterday by 11.48 points or 0.72% to 1,606.96. Gainers outnumbered losers 683 to 432 while 483 counters remained unchanged. Some 3.32 billion shares worth RM3.31bil changed hands. Fund outflows were also apparent in China, for example, as Bloomberg reported yesterday that exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that track Chinese stocks had seen record outflows last month. The US$7.2bil iShares China Large-Cap ETF saw about US$2.3bil in outflows last month, while investors pulled more than US$1bil from the KraneShares CSI China Internet Fund – the largest monthly redemption for both funds on record. Back home, Ng said the market would require broad-based buying support from all parties including foreign investors and retailers if the FBM KLCI is to be supported above 1,600 points in the longer term. “As of now, we are seeing net outflows by retailers and the only one supporting are the local institutions that have recorded some RM6bil of net buying this year. “Local funds are supporting the market,” Ng said. Tradeview Capital’s year-end target for the FBM KLCI is 1,650. “We have not revised this target. We think the market will be able to hold above this level until the end of this year from ample support by local institutions and some return in foreign investors. “Coupled with this is that our market valuations here are still reasonable,” Ng noted. He said key factors to look out for in the near term that would potentially affect market movements include any further interest rate cuts before Christmas and any major actions by other key central banks. “For the Bank of Japan – there is a likelihood it will raise its interest rates to 0.5% from 0.25%, which would be the biggest hike since 2008 for Japan. “This could mean big outflows of funds if it happens. “But if the United States continues its cut and Japan maintains there could be some inflows into emerging markets,” he said. Meanwhile, Fortress Capital Asset Management’s founder and chief executive officer Datuk Thomas Yong said some foreign investments would usually have a short-term investment horizon. “However, foreign participation remains small compared to local institutional funds. Foreign shareholding is currently below 20% and a large part of these remaining holdings are strategic investments with a longer-term investment horizon,” Yong said. “Hence, if further values emerge from any foreign selldown, local participation will absorb some of this selling. “As we move towards the year-end festive season, institutional market activities will likely slow down,” Yong noted. Moving forward, he expects investors will closely monitor political developments in the United States and headline announcements apart from business fundamentals. “Historically, the FBM KLCI usually sees positive performance in the final month of the year,” Yong added. Meanwhile, CIMB Research noted in its report that even as they net sold the broader market, foreign investors were the top net buyers in property sector stocks last week with Sime Darby Property Bhd , Tanco Holdings Bhd and YNH Property Bhd as their top net buy stocks. “Foreign investors continued as net buyers in the sector for the 12th straight week, but reduced their net buy value by 58% from the previous week to RM18.5mil,” it said. It also pointed out that real estate investment trusts (REITs) were foreign investors’ second-largest net buy sector last week, with IGB-REIT, Pavilion-REIT and Sunway-REIT as their top net buy stocks in this segment. “Foreign investors remained net buyers for the fifth week, but their net buy value fell slightly to RM4.7mil,” it added.The BC SPCA Kamloops animal centre has recovered several adult cats and kittens from a property, and is getting ready to receive between 15 and 25 more cats from the same property over the next few weeks. The animals were prioritized for recovery, with a female cat, her four kittens, and five other adults in the first intake. Sadly, two of the adult cats needed to be euthanized, while the kittens tested positive for coccidia and one of the adult cats tested positive for giardia. All the cats immediately went into quarantine and were treated. “This happens all too often when a kind person feeds a stray cat,” says Daria Evans, manager of the BC SPCA’s Kamloops animal centre. “In this case the finders began feeding stray cats in their community during the pandemic, and in no time at all the number of cats in their home more than doubled. “They became overwhelmed and reached out to us, and we are currently in the process of bringing all the cats into our care.” Evans adds that it’s likely that all of the cats in the home will require treatment, so the Kamloops centre is preparing for that. Coccidia and giardia are parasitic infections of the intestinal tract and are typically treated with oral medications and intravenous fluids if required. Although quite common and very treatable, they are both contagious. Once the cats clear quarantine, they will be placed with a BC SPCA foster carer or — if they are ready — made available for adoption. “Our goal is to bring all these babies into our care and treat them as soon as possible,” says Evans. “The kittens are very playful and sweet. They were a little grumpy when we gave them their coccidia baths, but that is to be expected. They now seem to be much happier and content.” The adult cats appear to be a mixture of indoor and outdoor animals. Staff at the centre have been pleasantly surprised at how comfortable the cats are around people, even though some may not have had as much human socialization as others. “They are very affectionate and love it when staff comes around to feed and care for them," says Evans. She notes that this case is a reminder that people should reach out if there are stray cats in their area, and the earlier the better. “It is amazing how quickly a cat population can explode.” The cats and kittens currently in care will be available for adoption later in December. You can help them — and other animals in need at the BC SPCA — by making a donation at .Passengers at some Canadian airports can now pass through security without removing liquids or electronics from their carry-on baggage, due to the adoption of new screening technology. “As the holiday season approaches, the introduction of CATSA’s new CT X-ray technology to one of our screening lanes at YYC couldn’t be more timely,” Calgary Airport Authority CEO and president Chris Dinsdale said in the press release. The devices will be installed at more airports as part of a multi-year CATSA national deployment program. The first year of deployment is estimated to cost approximately $23 million, CATSA spokesperson Dominique Huras told The Epoch Times. The timing of the deployment program will depend on finances and the readiness of airports to cooperate in the implementation of the devices, Huras said. The new devices do not pose a risk to health, the corporation added, noting the technology meets Health Canada’s safety standards, including the Radiation Emitting Devices Act, as well as Canadian electrical equipment safety regulations. The new screening technology only applies to permitted liquids up to 100 millilitres, CATSA said. Liquids exceeding this amount will still have to be removed from carry-on bags at security checkpoints. CATSA was established in 2002 as a Crown corporation responsible for ensuring public safety through proper screening of air passengers and their baggage. It is funded by parliamentary appropriations and accountable to Parliament through Canada’s minister of transport. The corporation had $859.59 million to fund its operations during the 2021-2022 fiscal year. The next airport to see the new screening line will be the Toronto Pearson International Airport, sometime before the holidays, said Huras.

Data from 2023 showed a 3% increase in police-reported family violence compared to 2022, with more than 139,000 total individuals affected. Intimate partner violence also rose by 1% year over year, resulting in 123,319 confirmed victims aged 12 and older. “In York Region alone, the police have reported an increase in dispatched calls for domestic related violence from 8,684 in 2019 to 10,083 in 2023,” Bernabe added. Based on data from the Ontario Association of Interval and Transitional Houses (OAITH), 59 femicides occurred in Ontario between Nov. 26, 2023, and Oct. 31, 2024. OAITH defines femicide as the “gender-based killing of a woman, child, trans woman, Two-Spirit person, or gender-nonconforming individual where a male has been charged in relation to the death.” Since 1990, Ontario has recorded more than 1,080 femicides. CFUW, founded in 1919, has more than 6,600 members and 94 local clubs across every Canadian province. Its vision is to empower women and girls through education to create transformative change throughout the world. The organization’s mission focuses on achieving educational and economic equality and promoting social justice through ongoing learning and advocacy. The Markham-Unionville CFUW Club, now in its 40th year, has 157 members. The campaign provides tools and encourages individual actions to address violence against women, such as writing to elected officials to raise awareness, supporting victim services through donations and volunteering, and calling out gendered violence. “We, as well as other Clubs, also continue to push for government declarations stating that violence against women is an epidemic, as statistics clearly show it fits that definition,” Seidman-Carlson said. “Sadly, not every community is willing to do so.” In her view, declaring intimate partner and gender-based violence an epidemic would trigger a public health-based response: “There would be an ability to access further funding and resources because of it, and I don’t think that everybody—at the council or provincial level—understands that.” While frustration boiled over in the Ontario Legislature during Monday’s Question Period debate over delays in making a Provincial declaration, York Region acknowledged the epidemic in September 2023. Regional Council committed to providing additional supports and published a list of available resources for victims in York Region. They also vowed to continue advocacy for further funding from other levels of government. Stouffville has yet to make the declaration. However, Mayor Iain Lovatt told Bullet Point News he would support a motion declaring intimate partner violence an epidemic in 2025. Councillor Sue Sherban also confirmed her intention to put forward the resolution. “Eliminating violence against women is not something that can be shouldered by any single individual or group. It’s a collective effort that requires involvement from all of us,” Lovatt said before raising the flag on Monday. “From individuals to communities, institutions, and government organizations, we must all come together to create a world where women are free from harm.”

The six Division of the Nigerian Army said its troops have destroyed 34 illegal refining sites, arrested eleven suspected oil thieves, and seized over 80,650 litres of stolen products in the Niger Delta. The Army said this followed several clearance operations conducted alongside other sister agencies in Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, and Akwa Ibom states respectively from November 18 and 24. 2024. The Acting Deputy Director, 6 Division Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Jonah Danjuma disclosed this in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Sunday. Giving account of the operations in Rivers State, Danuma said in Buguma Creeks in Asari-Toru Local Government, over eight illegal refining sites were deactivated, with dugout pits containing over 25,000 litres of stolen products handled. Furthermore, at Iyalama/Bakana, also in Buguma, a Wellhead used as a loading point by the criminals was discovered, several cooking pots of different sizes, receivers as well as four wooden boats were taken out with over 8, 000 litres of stolen products confiscated. The statement read further, “Troops, also intercepted a wooden boat stocked with over 6,000 litres of condensate in the same area. Similarly, around Ogaji – Ama, in Buguma South East River, two wooden boats loaded with over 3, 000 litres of stolen crude were intercepted. “In a related development, operations were conducted, around Asaramatoro Creek in Bonny LGA, where an illegal refining site with over 10,000 litres of stolen crude housed in a local reservoir was discovered. Relatedly, along Idu Ekpeye in Ahoada West LGA, a wooden boat with over 2,000 litres of stolen products was intercepted. At the Obiafu general area in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA, over 3,000 litres of stolen crude concealed in sacks were recovered. “Also, at Oboburu in ONELGA, troops had an encounter with an armed vandal who opened fire on them. They responded, and he was neutralised. One pump action gun and 5 cartridges were recovered at the scene. “While, around the Ke Community in Degema LG, a large wooden boat hidden inside the creek suspected to be used by the oil thieves was intercepted. Further combing of the general area led to the confiscation of a fibre boat laden with over 1,500 litres of stolen products. The current account surplus reached over $730 million in November, marking the fourth consecutive month of surpluses and the largest in nearly a decade. Projections for FY24-25 suggest the surplus could exceed $2 billion, fueled by rising remittances, improved exports, and a stable rupee. These developments spurred significant investment in the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), with the KSE index surging by 80 per cent during the year and market capitalisation expanding substantially. Despite these positive developments, several systemic challenges persist. Excessive taxation remains a significant obstacle. Instead of broadening the tax base or improving compliance, the FY25 budget further increased tax rates, disproportionately burdening businesses and households. This approach discourages investment in the formal sector, stifles economic activity, and fails to address underlying inefficiencies in the revenue system. Similarly, Pakistan’s energy costs remain among the highest globally, making the cost of doing business prohibitively expensive. Security concerns, including insurgent violence and militant activities, further disrupt economic activity, particularly in vulnerable regions, and deter foreign direct investment. To transition from stabilisation to sustainable growth, Pakistan must implement bold and comprehensive reforms. Governance reform is crucial for improving efficiency, reducing bureaucracy, and fostering transparency. Streamlining government operations, cutting redundant departments, and ensuring accountability for outcomes will create a more business-friendly environment and restore investor confidence. The tax system must be overhauled to broaden the base, improve compliance, and reduce reliance on high tax rates. Expanding the tax net to include under-taxed sectors and addressing exemptions for influential groups can create a fairer and more effective revenue system. The energy sector requires immediate reform, including major privatisation of generation, transmission and distribution sub-sectors to reduce the role of the public sector, and enhance efficiency and productivity through competition. Transparent, long-term policies must replace ad-hoc measures, encouraging investments in renewable energy and domestic resources like coal. Modernising the power grid and privatising utilities to enhance competition will reduce costs and improve efficiency. Investing in human capital is essential. Prioritising education, vocational training and healthcare will equip Pakistan’s population with the skills needed to compete in a global economy. Special emphasis on STEM education can foster innovation and entrepreneurship, preparing the workforce for the digital transformation of industries. The digital economy offers immense potential for growth. Removing restrictions on internet access and social media platforms is a necessary first step. Beyond this, the government must invest in digital infrastructure and foster public-private partnerships to create a thriving ecosystem for tech-enabled entrepreneurship. Supporting startups with seed funding, incubators, and reduced regulatory hurdles will stimulate innovation and diversify the economy. When first lady Betty Ford was diagnosed with breast cancer just weeks after Gerald Ford became president in 1974, she spoke openly about her diagnosis, inviting photographers into the White House and helping make talk of cancer less taboo. In 1987, first lady Nancy Reagan used her breast cancer diagnosis as a chance to advocate for women to get mammograms. Her disclosure came two years after President Ronald Reagan's colon cancer diagnosis, about which the couple was equally as vocal. "Individuals throughout the country have been calling cancer physicians and information services in record numbers," the Los Angeles Times reported after Nancy Reagan's widely publicized surgery. The public showed a similar interest years earlier following Betty Ford's mastectomy. Another major milestone in celebrity health disclosures came in 1991, when 32-year-old NBA superstar Earvin "Magic" Johnson revealed he had tested positive for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Basketball great Kareem Abdul Jabbar talks about his irregular heartbeat, known as atrial fibrillation, and advocates for regular health screenings. These are one-sided relationships in which a person feels an emotional connection with another person, often a celebrity. People may feel as if they know the basketball player they've watched on the court for years, or the Hollywood actor they've followed, she said. They want to comfort them after a health disclosure. Social media has only increased this feeling of familiarity, as celebrities regularly share mundane – but fascinating – details of their daily lives, like what they eat for breakfast, their favorite socks, or the meditation they do before bed. "We spend a lifetime being exposed to celebrities through the media, and over time, you get to know these public figures," Gall Myrick said. "Some feel like friendships." A study published in the journal Science Communication in 2020 compared reactions to actor Tom Hanks, who had COVID-19 early in the pandemic, and an average person with COVID-19. Researchers found that participants identified more with Hanks when it came to estimating their own susceptibility to COVID-19. The participants also felt more emotional about the virus that causes COVID-19 when thinking about it in relation to Hanks versus an average person. When a celebrity reveals a health condition, it's a surprise that may feel personal, especially if they are well-liked and the health issue is dramatic and sudden. "We feel like we know them, and the emotional response is what can then push people out of their routine," Gall Myrick said. Noar said a celebrity health story is often a more interesting and powerful way to learn about a health condition than just the facts, which can feel overwhelming. People are drawn to the slew of media coverage that typically follows a celebrity disclosure, he said. "Some of these high-visibility public figures' stories are now woven into some of these illnesses," Noar said. For example, Angelina Jolie is often linked to the BRCA1 gene mutation after the actor shared she had a preventive double mastectomy because of her elevated breast cancer risk and had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed because of her increased risk for ovarian cancer. "It's a narrative, a story that humanizes the condition in a way that very informational communication really doesn't," Noar said. "People remember it, and it can potentially be a touch point." After a disclosure, patients may bring up a celebrity's story during a doctor's appointment and connect it to their own care. Today's multiplatform digital culture only amplifies celebrity messages. "You're seeing everyday people react to these events, and that can have a ripple effect too," Gall Myrick said. "We know from research that seeing messages more than once can be impactful. Often it's not just one billboard or one commercial that impacts behavior; it's the drip drip drip over time." Still, there's a cautionary tale to be told around the impact of celebrity health news, especially if the celebrity has died. An unclear cause of death may lead to speculation. Gall Myrick said that guesswork could potentially end up hurting rather than helping if patients were to act on misinformation or a lack of information. "Maybe the death was atypical or it needs more context," she said. "That's where advocacy groups and public health organizations come in. With the relentless rise of AI-powered digital technology, we're seeing growing concerns about our students. These include their declining literacy as well as the ills of digital dependence, disinformation and deepfakes. When I ask my grad students about some toxic social scenes of digital addiction, their responses are pretty familiar: their own endless scrolling through short videos and social media, and the daily sight of everyone glued to their phones on buses and subways. These responses are a fitting reflection of our current society. But there’s another side to this narrative -- while people may be staring at their phones, it doesn't mean they're just wasting time. A lot of them are getting information, doing chores with apps, texting friends and family, or consuming entertainment of their choice. Indeed, we (or is it just me?) often don’t bother making small talk with the strangers next to us. We scroll away, also missing the chance to enjoy the scenery outside the window. Yet, we still manage to connect with the people and things we care about through digital means. Likewise, when we discuss children's declining literacy, there is often this worry that younger students are losing interest in classic literature or having trouble with some Sino-Korean words (just like how some English words come from Greek or Latin roots). But is this really the dire consequence of digital civilization, and a red flag for all of us? To me, it’s more of a natural shift. Young people today are trading in pencils, paper and text for touchscreens, videos, images and VR headsets as their primary means of communication. From the perspective of those who have wielded power through the enduring weight of text, this change may seem uncomfortable, even deficient. Yet, from the vantage of the younger generation, it is the text-centric generation that appears woefully lacking in digital fluency. If these are the benefits and drawbacks of the fourth industrial revolution -- particularly AI technology -- from an educational perspective, let's quickly look at what earlier revolutions did for education. The second industrial revolution, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, introduced electric power and mass production systems. The third industrial revolution -- the information age -- ushered in computers, the internet and all kinds of digital tools with fast processors and big memory. The second and third industrial revolutions each brought significant changes to education. One major benefit of the second industrial revolution was the expansion of public education. As mass production increased the need for literate workers, governments introduced compulsory education to develop a workforce capable of meeting these demands, expanding educational opportunities across different social strata. However, each revolution also introduced new inequalities, such as discrepancies in access to resources, prompting debates over the purpose of education. For instance, mass production led to the standardization of education, often overlooking individual talents and creativity. The concentration of educational resources among the wealthy also exacerbated inequities between the "haves" and "have-nots." The third industrial revolution had its own drawbacks as well. The digital divide became a significant issue, as not all students had equal access to computers or the internet, leading to disparities in educational opportunities. Too much use of digital tools has reduced social interaction, diminishing students' social skills and often leading to isolation and loneliness. Plus, the flood of information online and the lack of classroom support to process it has led to information overload and shorter attention spans, making learning even harder. Now, in the midst of the fourth industrial age -- driven by AI -- we find ourselves facing concerns about education while clinging to traditions, much like during previous transitions from one revolution to the next. That is, the worries of one generation often become the traditions of the next -- just as 80s video games, once new and uncertain, have now become a nostalgic cultural commodity. Not long ago, the digital revolution was seen as a threat to our simple analog lives, but now it’s praised for democratizing knowledge, enabling online learning, and expanding education. Today, the fourth industrial revolution is driving education forward with innovations like AI tutors, dashboards and smart content creation tools, making learning more personalized and effective. However, AI also introduces renewed ethical challenges in addressing issues like privacy, bias, and the role of human judgment and creativity. Concerns about digital inequity and dependence also remain very real. As we fret over the impact of AI on education, I can’t help but wonder: When the fifth industrial revolution comes along, will we look back on today’s tech-focused education as the "good old days," just as we always romanticize our past? This cycle reminds us to approach technological change not only with caution but also with curiosity and an open mind, recognizing that the future we fear today might one day become the past we celebrate. In widespread raids conducted in catering units across northern Kerala, Food Safety authorities have issued closure notices to 10 catering units which were found to be functioning in violation of the guidelines prescribed by the Food Safety and Standards Act. A special task force of the Food Safety wing had conducted checks in over 186 catering units in Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod, Malappuram, and Wayanad over the weekend. The inspections were held following widespread complaints about the lack of hygiene and safety standards of catering units which supply food for various social events and the increasing incidents of food poisoning. Apart from closing down 10 catering units, 40 institutions were issued rectification notices and another six issued improvement notices. About 45 catering units were asked to pay fines. Food Safety officials examined the licences of catering units, the medical fitness certificates of food handlers, water quality report, pest control guidelines, general hygiene, the raw materials stocked in kitchens and the manner in which food is transported to various venues. Vitali worked as an embed during President-elect Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign, later reporting on the White House for NBC’s digital coverage and then as a political reporter and finally a correspondent on Capitol Hill. She reported on-site at Capitol Hill when then-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was pushed out. The longtime NBC employee rose through the ranks after first joining the company in 2010 as an intern, working for NBC ad sales, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and finally MSNBC, according to her LinkedIn. She is the author of the 2022 book “Electable: Why America Hasn’t Put a Woman in the White House...Yet.” Lemire, who is also the White House bureau chief at Politico, hosted MSNBC’s early morning show for just over three years.
