Lucknow: Months after the ruling BJP’s poor Lok Sabha poll performance in Uttar Pradesh, the saffron party hit the opposition parties out of the park by winning six of the nine Assembly seats in the state where bypolls were held on November 20. Adding to BJP’s emphatic performance, its ally Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) clinched Meerapur, the lone seat it contested. The Samajwadi Party (SP) emerged victorious on the remaining two seats — Karhal and Sishamau. According to the Election Commission (EC), the BJP candidates emerged victorious in Kundarki, Ghaziabad, Khair (SC), Phulpur, Katehari and Majhawan assembly constituencies. In Phulpur, BJP’s Deepak Patel bagged 78,289 votes to defeat his nearest rival and SP nominee Md Mujtaba Siddiqui by 11,305 votes. In Ghaziabad, saffron party nominee Sanjeev Sharma polled 96,946 votes to trounce his nearest rival Singh Raj Jatav of the SP by 69,351 votes, while his party colleague Surender Diler emerged victorious in Khair, defeating SP’s Charu Kain by 38,393 votes. BJP’s Suchismita Maurya, who bagged 77,737 votes, defeated her nearest rival Jyoti Bind of the SP by 4,922 votes in Majhawan, while Dharmraj Nishad of the BJP won the Katehari seat, beating SP’s Shobhawati Varma by 34,514 votes. In Kundarki, BJP’s Ramveer SIngh made short work of Mohammad Rizwan of the SP, winning by 1,44,791 votes. SP’s Tej Pratap Yadav secured 1,04,304 votes to pip BJP’s Anujesh Pratap Singh by 14,725 votes in Karhal. The seat fell vacant after SP chief Akhilesh Yadav got elected to the Lok Sabha from Kannauj earlier this year. Tej Pratap’s party colleague Naseem Solanki defeated BJP’s Suresh Awasthi by 8,564 votes in Sishamau where Bahujan Samaj Party’s (BSP) Virendra Kumar finished a distant third with 1,410 votes. The bypoll in Sishamau was necessitated after three-time sitting SP MLA Irfan Solanki, the husband of Naseem Solanki, was disqualified following his conviction in a criminal case. In Meerapur, RLD’s Mithilesh Pal bagged 84,304 votes to defeat her nearest rival Sumbul Rana of the SP by 30,796 votes. In the 2022 Assembly elections, the BJP won Phulpur, Ghaziabad, Majhawan and Khair, while the SP emerged victorious in Sishamau, Katehari, Karhal and Kundarki. The RLD, which was an SP ally then, won the Meerapur seat. The Congress stayed away from the bypolls this time after extending support to its INDIA bloc ally SP. The BSP fielded candidates in all nine seats, while the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) put up nominees in Ghaziabad, Kundarki and Meerapur. The Aazad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) led by Chandrashekhar Aazad was also in the fray in all the seats barring Sishamau. Presently, the BJP has 251 MLAs and the SP 105 in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly. BJP allies Apna Dal (Sonelal), RLD, Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party and Nishad Party also have members in the House. The Congress and the Jansatta Dal Loktantrik have two seats each, while the BSP has one MLA in the 403-member Uttar Pradesh Assembly.
With a new year ahead and the holiday fanfare behind, this is a great time to set money goals, especially if you recently spent a lot on gifts and travel and want to get your finances in shape. You’d be in good company, too — according to a January 2024 survey from the Pew Research Center, of the 30% of Americans who made at least one New Year’s resolution, 61% had a goal that was money-related. Right now, you may be highly motivated to solve every single one of your money issues in the next few months, but daily life is guaranteed to get in the way. Your financial to-do list, once so full of promise, can eventually get stuffed in the back of a drawer while you manage more pressing matters. The vast majority of New Year’s resolutions go unfulfilled. So how can you improve your odds of success? It comes down to accepting that you won’t have the time or energy to complete every task to perfection. Creating a system where you can prioritize, plan ahead and hold yourself accountable can help. Consider unexpected high-impact actions Many start by setting a goal to trim frivolous costs, which can certainly be helpful, but there are other ways to make a big difference. Taylor Schult — a certified financial planner and founder of Define Financial, an advisory firm in San Diego — recommends starting with a few overlooked financial tasks. Freezing your credit is a quick, easy way to guard yourself against identity theft. It’s free to do, and you can temporarily lift the freeze when you’re applying for a loan or credit card. Schulte also suggests looking into umbrella insurance , which offers additional coverage beyond what your auto, homeowners and other insurance policies provide. This coverage can spare you from massive out-of-pocket costs in the event you get sued. Basic estate planning, including creating a will, is another thing to put high on your list. Putting off this task can create a major headache for your loved ones if something happens to you unexpectedly. “I know it’s a pain point and it’s often kicked down the road,” Schulte says. Paying attention to your spending is always important, but don’t neglect taking steps to protect your money, yourself and your loved ones. Focus on what actually matters to you So many money goals are born out of social pressure. You “should” want to save up to own a home, even if you’re happily renting. You “should” sacrifice short-term needs and wants to stash away as much as possible for retirement, even though it leaves you feeling deprived. But money goals should be tied to the things that matter most to you. If they aren’t, you’ll quickly lose interest. “If you don’t know what goals to choose, go back to your values and have them guide the goals you set,” says Eric Roberge, a certified financial planner and founder of Beyond Your Hammock, a financial advisory firm in Boston. You can combine goal-setting with a little planning, so expenses are less likely to creep up on you throughout the year. Think about what expected costs will be coming up in the next six to 12 months, like recurring bills, vacations, anticipated home or car repairs, and other expenses. This approach allows you to set money aside each month to put toward planned costs, as well as longer-term goals. Hold yourself accountable Forgetting your goals can be far too easy, so to make something stick, write it down . It can be as simple as a handwritten list you keep on the fridge, or online calendar reminders that will nudge you every so often. For time-sensitive goals, set deadlines. One tactic is to make multiple lists based on what you need to complete within the next week, month or three months. As time passes and you check off items, you can update the list. Enlist others’ help, too. Weekly or monthly household money meetings are useful if you’re completing financial tasks as a group. Or share your goals with a trusted friend or family member who can serve as an accountability partner. Looping in loved ones can help keep you on track. “We don’t mind letting ourselves down,” Schulte says. “But we hate to let other people down.” Recognize when 'done' is better than 'perfect' It’s easy to get stuck in decision-making mode when trying to pick a high-yield savings account, credit card or possible investments, but eventually, you need to make a good-enough choice . Taking action now can have more of a positive effect on your life than waiting until you’ve painstakingly considered each option. Roberge says that though he’d prefer to optimize every financial decision, he doesn’t because if he did, he wouldn’t get things done. “Everything in moderation is one of the things that I live by,” he says. “Going to extremes in any one thing, at the detriment of other things that are important, doesn’t work long-term.” More From NerdWallet Boost Your Credit Card Rewards This Holiday With a Few Extra Clicks Activating Your Credit Card? Canada Post says it has removed the deadline for its Santa Claus letter program amid an ongoing national workers’ strike that has halted mail delivery leading up to the holiday season. Some 55,000 workers walked off the job more than two weeks ago, suspending mail service — and a program that helps deliver up to 1.5 million letters from Canadian kids to the North Pole each year. The postal service says in a statement that while the initial deadline to mail a letter to Santa with the iconic H0H 0H0 postal code was Dec. 6, it has now removed the deadline from its website. It says once operations resume, it will ensure that all letters make it to the North Pole and receive a reply, but it cannot guarantee delivery dates. Canada Post says since the program began more than 40 years ago, Santa’s North Pole post office has delivered replies to more than 45 million letters. During the strike, some communities have stepped up to deliver Santa’s mail themselves, offering their own local programming on social media to make sure letter writers receive a reply by Christmas. The strike entered its 19th day as the Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping weekend came to a close. Canada Post said Monday it was waiting for the union to respond to a framework it presented over the weekend for reaching negotiated agreements. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers has said it’s reviewed the proposal. It said Canada Post has moved closer to the union’s position on some issues, but the framework “still remains far from something members could ratify.” One of the sticking points has been a push to add weekend delivery, with the union and Canada Post disagreeing over how the rollout would work. The federal government has been under pressure from the business community to intervene in the strike but has said that’s not in the cards.Tulsi Gabbard, Trump’s pick for intel chief, faces questions on Capitol Hill amid Syria fallout
