lightning roulette COLUMBUS, Ohio — Bruce Thornton scored 25 points to lead seven players in double figures, and Devin Royal posted a double-double as Ohio State steamrolled Green Bay 102-69 on Monday night. Thornton made 7 of 10 shots with five 3-pointers for the Buckeyes (5-1), who improved to 4-0 at home. He made 6 of 7 at the free-throw line and totaled nine assists. Royal pitched in with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Meechie Johnson scored 15 of his 17 points in the first half to help Ohio State take a 42-32 lead into the locker room. John Mobley Jr. had 14 points and Sean Stewart added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Buckeyes. Micah Parrish and reserve Evan Mahaffey both scored 10. Anthony Roy scored 30 points to lead the Phoenix (2-5), who fell to 1-4 on the road. Roy buried 10 of 16 shots, including 8 of 12 from beyond the arc. He has scored at least 30 in three straight games and done it four times this season. Roy, an NAIA All-America choice last season at Langston University, leads the nation with a 28.0 scoring average. The Buckeyes topped the century mark for a second straight game after posting a 104-60 victory over Campbell their last time out. Ohio State outrebounded Green Bay 37-23 and scored 30 points off of 18 turnovers by the Phoenix. Ohio State shot 55.9% from the floor, 45.2% from beyond the arc (14 for 31) and made 12 of 19 free throws. Green Bay shot 49% overall and 41.7% from distance (10 for 24). The Phoenix were 11 for 16 at the foul line. The Buckeyes will host Pittsburgh on Friday. Green Bay returns home to play Campbell on Saturday.Minister: UK courts would need to make decision on Netanyahu arrest warrant

By HILLEL ITALIE NEW YORK (AP) — Even through a year of nonstop news about elections, climate change, protests and the price of eggs, there was still time to read books. U.S. sales held steady according to Circana, which tracks around 85% of the print market, with many choosing the relief of romance, fantasy and romantasy. Some picked up Taylor Swift’s tie-in book to her blockbuster tour, while others sought out literary fiction, celebrity memoirs, political exposes and a close and painful look at a generation hooked on smartphones. Here are 10 notable books published in 2024, in no particular order. Asking about the year’s hottest reads would basically yield a list of the biggest hits in romantasy, the blend of fantasy and romance that has proved so irresistible fans were snapping up expensive “special editions” with decorative covers and sprayed edges. Of the 25 top sellers of 2024, as compiled by Circana, six were by romantasy favorite Sarah J. Maas, including “House of Flame and Shadow,” the third of her “Crescent City” series. Millions read her latest installment about Bryce Quinlan and Hunter Athalar and traced the ever-growing ties of “Maasverse,” the overlapping worlds of “Crescent City” and her other series, “Throne of Glass” and “A Court of Thorns and Roses.” If romantasy is for escape, other books demand we confront. In the bestselling “The Anxious Generation,” social psychologist Jonathan Haidt looks into studies finding that the mental health of young people began to deteriorate in the 2010s, after decades of progress. According to Haidt, the main culprit is right before us: digital screens that have drawn kids away from “play-based” to “phone-based” childhoods. Although some critics challenged his findings, “The Anxious Generation” became a talking point and a catchphrase. Admirers ranged from Oprah Winfrey to Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee, who in a letter to state legislators advocated such “commonsense recommendations” from the book as banning phones in schools and keeping kids off social media until age 16. Bob Woodward books have been an election tradition for decades. “War,” the latest of his highly sourced Washington insider accounts, made news with its allegations that Donald Trump had been in frequent contact with Russian leader Vladimir Putin even while out of office and, while president, had sent Putin sophisticated COVID-19 test machines. Among Woodward’s other scoops: Putin seriously considered using nuclear weapons against Ukraine, and President Joe Biden blamed former President Barack Obama, under whom he served as vice president, for some of the problems with Russia. “Barack never took Putin seriously,” Woodward quoted Biden as saying. Former (and future) first lady Melania Trump, who gives few interviews and rarely discusses her private life, unexpectedly announced she was publishing a memoir: “Melania.” The publisher was unlikely for a former first lady — not one of the major New York houses, but Skyhorse, where authors include such controversial public figures as Woody Allen and Trump cabinet nominee Robert F. Kennedy Jr. And its success was at least a minor surprise. Melania Trump did little publicity for the book, and offered few revelations beyond posting a video expressing support for abortion rights — a break from one of the cornerstones of GOP policy. But “Melania” still sold hundreds of thousands of copies, many in the days following her husband’s election. Taylor Swift was more than a music story in 2024. Like “Melania,” the news about Taylor Swift’s self-published tie-in to her global tour isn’t so much the book itself, but that it exists. And how well it sold. As she did with the “Eras” concert film, Swift bypassed the established industry and worked directly with a distributor: Target offered “The Eras Tour Book” exclusively. According to Circana, the “Eras” book sold more than 800,000 copies just in its opening week, an astonishing number for a publication unavailable through Amazon.com and other traditional retailers. No new book in 2024 had a better debut. Midnight book parties are supposed to be for “Harry Potter” and other fantasy series, but this fall, more than 100 stores stayed open late to welcome one of the year’s literary events: Sally Rooney’s “Intermezzo.” The Irish author’s fourth novel centers on two brothers, their grief over the death of their father, their very different career paths and their very unsettled love lives. “Intermezzo” was also a book about chess: “You have to read a lot of opening theory — that’s the beginning of a game, the first moves,” one of the brothers explains. “And you’re learning all this for what? Just to get an okay position in the middle game and try to play some decent chess. Which most of the time I can’t do anyway.” Lisa Marie Presley had been working on a memoir at the time of her death , in 2023, and daughter Riley Keough had agreed to help her complete it. “From Here to the Great Unknown” is Lisa Marie’s account of her father, Elvis Presley, and the sagas of of her adult life, notably her marriage to Michael Jackson and the death of son Benjamin Keough. To the end, she was haunted by the loss of Elvis, just 42 when he collapsed and died at his Graceland home while young Lisa Marie was asleep. “She would listen to his music alone, if she was drunk, and cry,” Keough, during an interview with Winfrey, said of her mother. Meanwhile, Cher released the first of two planned memoirs titled “Cher” — no further introduction required. Covering her life from birth to the end of the 1970s, she focuses on her ill-fated marriage to Sonny Bono, remembering him as a gifted entertainer and businessman who helped her believe in herself while turning out to be unfaithful, erratic, controlling and so greedy that he kept all the couple’s earnings for himself. Unsure of whether to leave or stay, she consulted a very famous divorcee, Lucille Ball, who reportedly encouraged her: “F— him, you’re the one with the talent.” A trend in recent years is to take famous novels from the past, and remove words or passages that might offend modern readers; an edition of “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” cuts the racist language from Mark Twain’s original text. In the most celebrated literary work of 2024, Percival Everett found a different way to take on Twain’s classic — write it from the perspective of the enslaved Jim. “James,” winner of the National Book Award, is a recasting in many ways. Everett suggests to us that the real Jim was nothing like the deferential figure known to millions of readers, but a savvy and learned man who concealed his intelligence from the whites around him, and even from Twain himself. Salman Rushdie’s first National Book Award nomination was for a memoir he wished he had no reason to write. In “Knife,” he recounts in full detail the horrifying attempt on his life in 2022, when an attendee rushed the stage during a literary event in western New York and stabbed him repeatedly, leaving with him a blinded eye and lasting nerve damage, but with a spirit surprisingly intact. “If you had told me that this was going to happen and how would I deal with it, I would not have been very optimistic about my chances,” he told The Associated Press last spring. “I’m still myself, you know, and I don’t feel other than myself. But there’s a little iron in the soul, I think.”Social media is expected to further influence customer service and retail spaces during 2025. New survey insights (2,000 U.S. and U.K. consumers) reveal how users expect to engage with social media in 2025 . Across all users, approximately even amounts (29-34 percent) plan to use Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok more in 2025, while 24 percent of respondents do not plan to use any social networks more in 2025. When it comes to trust in social media, 63 percent of users somewhat trust social media networks to protect their personal data. Only 22 percent completely trust social media networks, and 16 percent do not trust them at all. Complete trust is higher among Gen Z and Millennials (28 percent and 29 percent) than among Gen X and Baby Boomers (19 percent and 10 percent). Specific to what brands should prioritize on social media in 2025, most respondents say personalized customer service (40 percent) or selling products directly through social platforms (29 percent) are important to them. Sprout Social’s CMO, Scott Morris has shared insights with Digital Journal what to expect and how marketing leaders can stay ahead. Prediction #1: Dominance In 2025, social media will dominate the customer service game. Everyone, especially younger generations, is turning to platforms like Facebook and Instagram first to get their customer service questions answered quickly. And the expectation for speed and personalization has never been higher. In fact, Sprout Social’s most recent Index report shows that 69 percent of people expect a response within 24 hours of reaching out on social media, and 70 percent expect those responses to be personalized. To meet these rising expectations, brands will have to learn to strike a balance between automation and human touch, dispersing AI to handle routine inquiries while leaving customer care teams to focus on complex issues. Prediction #2: Platforms remaining on top Social platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok will be the top shopping destinations for consumers in 2025. People’s plans for the holiday shopping season are evidence of that. Sprout Social’s Q4 2024 Pulse Survey found that 42 percent of shoppers plan to use social media more to find gifts, with social influencer recommendations being the #1 source of gift inspiration across all respondents, up from the fifth source one year ago. That same survey found that 32 percent of consumers plan to make more purchases directly through social channels in 2025, giving brands the opportunity to use social media to facilitate a complete customer journey, from discovery to post-purchase. With this influx of buyers, AI-driven customer care will play a critical role, offering real-time responses and tailored product recommendations to enhance customer experience. The Salvation Army came to the aid of folks who were having a tough time paying their medical bills in 1921. In November, the Salvation Army announced a free medical clinic each week on Tuesdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. All of the community physicians agreed to participate and for two hours per week, their services were free. ADVERTISEMENT Even the pharmacies in Jamestown got involved, offering medicine at cost for any prescription written during the free clinic. “All residents of the city who cannot afford medical attention along the regular channels will not only be permitted but urged to take advantage of the clinic,” wrote The Jamestown Alert. The officers of the Salvation Army saw a need in the community. “It is stated by Captain Larsen that many people in Jamestown without funds are doing without medical attention,” The Alert wrote. While the Great Depression did not officially begin until the stock market crash in 1929, hard times struck rural areas that relied on agriculture much sooner. Crop prices fell dramatically when the battlefields of France and Belgium returned to agricultural production. That decline in prices hit farm towns like Jamestown hard with some of the businesses of the community failing or cutting their payrolls. This left a lot of people unable to afford a trip to the doctor for themselves and their children. ADVERTISEMENT In fact, the Salvation Army was considering a special Saturday afternoon free clinic for children. Clinic planners thought the clinic would specialize in “undernourishment or other trouble.” Keep in mind this was eight years before the start of what we now know as the Great Depression. There is no record of how many people took advantage of the Salvation Army’s free clinic in 1921. We do know that the folks in need a little more than a century ago had a chance to get the help they needed right in Jamestown. Author Keith Norman can be reached at www.KeithNormanBooks.com

Trump's base goes to war with incoming officials over US visas for foreign talentFormer Super Bowl Champion's Deion Sanders, Cowboys Message Turns Heads

Trump gave Interior nominee one directive for a half-billion acres of US land: ‘Drill.’The League of Northern Democrats (LND), said the Nigerian government response to the allegation of planned destabilisation of Niger Republic by its military ruler, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, raises more questions than answers. The league had challenged the Federal Government to react to the allegations because to keep silent would erode public confidence. LND in a statement on Friday, expressed worry at what it described as “France’s well-documented history of destabilising regions to secure access to natural resources.” The statement by the spokesman Dr. Ladan Salihu, said critical analysis of the Nigerian government’s denial and its supporting arguments reveals significant gaps in logic and veracity. “The government categorically denies colluding with France to destabilise Niger. However, France’s track record in Africa – supporting insurgencies and covert operations to secure resources – casts doubt on this outright dismissal,” the league added. It wondered why Boko Haram, ISWAP and other terror groups continued to acquire sophisticated weapons, including drones, which, it noted, are accessible only through state-sponsored channels or illicit global arms networks, if Nigeria was committed to combating terrorism. “Who are the actors facilitating these supplies and why has the government failed to curtail these supply lines for nearly two decades?” it asked. The league recalled that President Bola Tinubu as Chairman of ECOWAS had openly backed military invasion of Niger Republic “but for the refusal of the EU and the international community. “Nigeria’s support for ECOWAS sanctions and even military invasion against Niger following the military coup undermines this claim of fostering peace. These sanctions have exacerbated the suffering of ordinary Nigeriens and strained bilateral relations, indicating a misalignment between rhetoric and actions.” According to the statement, the Nigerian government’s denial of hosting foreign military bases does not address the central issue of “the presence of highly sophisticated weaponry in the hands of insurgents. “The claim that Nigeria safeguards its sovereignty does not explain how international arms and funding networks continue to fuel terrorism within its borders. “If Nigeria is indeed independent in its security operations, why has it been unable to intercept these networks or identify their sources?” It noted that the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline and Kano-Maradi Railway highlighted as evidence of its commitment to Niger’s development, were faced with delays and controversies, which it said, was often attributed to instability in the region. “If Nigeria truly prioritises these initiatives, its inability to address the root causes of regional insecurity, such as arms proliferation and terrorist funding, calls into question its sincerity. “The government’s denial of the existence of a Lakurawa terrorist headquarters in Sokoto State is undermined by the documented presence of insurgent strongholds within Nigeria’s borders. “While Operation Forest Sanity III is cited as a countermeasure, such initiatives have yet to produce lasting results. The persistence of terrorism suggests either a lack of capacity or complicity, and dismissing these allegations without transparency only fuels skepticism,” the league argued. Arewa Think Tank blames desperate politicians Meanwhile, a Northern group, Arewa Think Tank (ATT) has blamed politicians for being behind the allegations by Tchiani, saying that the claims by the Niger Republic leader were the imagination and calculated moves by “desperate politicians to frustrate President Tinubu from giving Nigerians the much needed dividends of democracy.” In a statement on Friday by its Convener, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, the Arewa Think Tank argued that Nigeria has never engaged in any overt or covert alliance with France or any other country to sponsor terrorist attacks or destabilize the Niger Republic in the wake of the undemocratic change in the leadership of that country. “We are therefore warning desperate politicians not to mismanage our relationship with Niger Republic and cause acrimony between the two neighbouring countries. Nigeria has the history of living peacefully with the world, not to talk of living peacefully with its neighbours. The election has come and gone, it is time for governance. Politicians should wait until the whistle is blown for another election before they will start doing what they want to do for the electioneering campaign. “For now, we want peace in the country so that we can enjoy the dividends of democracy. These desperate politicians should allow President Tinubu to govern well. If they have issues with him, they should meet him for an amicable settlement, but not to rock the boat. They should not show their desperation to destabilise the country because there must be a country before anybody can govern. “Desperate politicians should not collaborate with foreign enemies to destroy this country. They have been trying to destroy this great country for a long time. We won’t allow them to do it. By God’s grace they will not succeed, Tinubu will succeed.” The Northern group said: “Arewa Think Tank strongly rejects allegations made in a viral video by the military leader of Niger Republic, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, claiming non-existent collusion between Nigeria and France to destabilize his country. “These claims exist solely in the realm of imagination, as Nigeria has never engaged in any overt or covert alliance with France – or any other country – to sponsor terrorist attacks or destabilize the Niger Republic in the wake of the undemocratic change in the leadership of that country. “It is on record that President Tinubu as Chairman of ECOWAS, has demonstrated exemplary leadership, keeping the doors of the sub-regional body open to re-engaging the Niger Republic despite the political situation in the country. “We believe that Nigeria remains committed to fostering peace, harmony, and historic diplomatic ties with Niger. We are happy that Nigeria’s Armed Forces, in collaboration with partners in the Multinational Joint Task Force, are succeeding in curbing terrorism within the region. It is, therefore, absurd to suggest that Nigeria would conspire with any foreign power to undermine the peace and security of a neighbouring country.” ATT said as a group committed to peace and unity of our country, Arewa Think Tank knows that no part of Nigeria has been ceded to any foreign power for subversive operations in Niger Republic. “We will continue to encourage Nigerian government officials for their untiring commitment to fostering peace and security between the government and people of Nigeria and Niger Republic, and for their efforts towards stronger cooperation in the ECOWAS region.” the statement said.

Little did Amanda Schwarz know that when she and her husband Mark began rebuilding his grandfather's farm it would also be the beginning of a new business venture. "There was some barn wood from (his grandfather's machine shed) that he was just going to dump and I was like, 'Oh, you can't do that,'" Schwarz said. "I'm a person who likes meaning and heritage and symbolism and all that, so he cut up the wood and stuck it in a corner of our barn and it sat there for a few years." Later, Schwarz stumbled across a Pinterest "fail or success" video about pallet wood being turned into pine tree decorations and she became inspired. "What I loved about it was, I had the barn wood," she said. "I could turn it into a piece that was a heritage piece for Mark's extended family, his sisters, his parents, his aunt, everybody who grew up in this place or lived on this farm." Schwarz learned how to use a miter saw and made some prototypes, and when a friend saw them, they told her that she could sell pieces like those. The idea blossomed into what would become Rustic Lux Designs, which over the years has grown far beyond simple pallet wood pine trees. Schwarz started sharing her products on social media, then she set up at a Lakeview craft fair, then she started taking orders and got a website up and running. Today, Schwarz has a wood shop, three laser cutters and multiple partnerships and craft fairs she participates in locally. Blossoms Floral has carried her products for close to nine of the 10 years she's been in business, Schwarz said. "The majority of my business is just directly through me, whether it's through my social media, you know, people finding me on social media or seeing me at a craft show or word of mouth," Schwarz said. "It's grown very organically. I've never paid for an ad. I've just just kind of grown this little hobby into a business." One of the more popular pieces that Schwarz makes is a whiskey barrel head engraved with names — one of the few custom items she does. Schwarz said she uses Jim Beam barrel heads. Schwarz also makes custom signs from barn wood, adding names or framing it. After 10 years, she's built quite a catalog of items, from the barrel head signs to leather bookmarks. For the 10th anniversary, Schwarz even did a series highlighting her products for the 10 days before the 10-year anniversary, showcasing everything, big to small. "Some of that is 'giftables' and my giftables are little items I that I'm typically just engraving on," Schwarz said. "I'll buy a blank of material from another maker or a wholesale piece of leather, something like that, and turn it into a bookmark or I do a lot of ornaments." This is far from a side hustle at this point, Schwarz said, as her little project a decade ago had grown into a minimum of 40 hours a week at this point. "This time of year, you will find me out here 16-18 hours a day, so this is very full time and has been full time since about the third year in," Schwarz said. She does have some help in the form of a neighbor, Rachel Wilke. Wilke said she only occasionally helps, but sees the work Schwarz puts in and wants to help if she is able. The thing that really sets Rustic Lux Designs apart is Schwarz herself, Wilke said. "What makes it special?" Wilke asked rhetorically. "It's just Amanda. She's creative, she's talented and she's passionate about what she does. She gives her heart and soul into every authentic piece." Wilke emphasized that the items are made in a local workshop, by a local artist in rural Columbus, which adds a special something. "She connects with people," Wilke said. "She takes your ideas, your favorite sayings, turns it into a masterpiece, no matter what the size." The handmade concept is sort of a core principle of her work, Schwarz said. She is very empathetic and wants her items to have meaning. Things like wooden sympathy ornaments may be just pieces of wood, but the words on them and the thought behind something original and handmade can carry a lot of meaning to someone and that's what she tries to put into all her work. Whether it's a family name on a hanging sign, a Christmas ornament, a sympathy decoration or a sign for a wedding, her objects all have meaning, Schwarz said. "Words are power," Schwarz said. "That really is the very strong tie that runs through everything I do, no matter if I'm engraving something or adding words to something. It's powerful to just be able to keep those things in front of you." Part of that process is, of course, making those things from scratch, by hand, she said. "It very much falls back on words and healing," Schwarz said. "I'm very start-from-scratch, very handcrafted. Kind of a little line that I use is handcrafted with heart and soul." While Rustic Lux's 10 year celebration is past, Schwarz will have her items at the Downtown Stroll, starting Nov. 21 in Downtown Columbus as well as the Scotus Craft Show on Dec. 1 and the Lakeview December to Remember event on Dec. 8. FIUGGI, Italy (AP) — Foreign ministers from the world’s leading industrialized nations expressed cautious optimism Monday about possible progress on a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. The top diplomats met for the final time before a new U.S. administration takes office with wars raging in the Mideast and Ukraine. “Knock on wood,” Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said as he opened the Group of Seven meeting outside Rome. “We are perhaps close to a ceasefire in Lebanon," he said. "Let's hope it's true and that there's no backing down at the last-minute.” A ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon was foremost on the agenda of the G7 meeting in Fiuggi, outside Rome, that gathered ministers from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, in the last G7 encounter of the Biden administration. For the first time, the G7 ministers were joined by their counterparts from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, the so-called “Arab Quintet,” as well as the Secretary General of the Arab League. “Everyone favors a ceasefire in both scenarios,” Tajani told reporters, adding that Italy had offered to take on an even greater peacekeeping role in Lebanon to oversee any ceasefire deal. As the ministers arrived in Italy, Israel’s ambassador to the U.S., Mike Herzog, told Israeli Army Radio on Monday a ceasefire deal to end fighting between Israel and the Lebanon-based Hezbollah could be reached “within days.” Several Arab ministers reiterated calls for a ceasefire in both Lebanon and Gaza during a G7-affiliated conference in Rome. “We need a ceasefire, a permanent ceasefire. That will stop the killings and stop the destruction and restore a sense of normalcy to life,” Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi told the conference. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, for his part, reaffirmed that Cairo would host a minister-level conference next Monday on mobilizing international aid for Gaza. The so-called “Quintet” has been working with the U.S. to finalize a “day after” plan for Gaza. There is some urgency to make progress before the Trump administration takes over in January. President-elect Donald Trump is expected to pursue a policy that strongly favors Israel over the aspirations of the Palestinians. Tajani added another item to the G7 agenda last week after the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his former defense minister and Hamas’ military chief. Italy is a founding member of the court and hosted the 1998 Rome conference that gave birth to it. But Italy’s right-wing government has been a strong supporter of Israel after the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks, while also providing humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza. The Italian government has taken a cautious line, reaffirming its support and respect for the court but expressing concern that the warrants were politically motivated. The United States, Israel's closest ally, has called the warrants “outrageous.” Tajani acknowledged consensus hadn't been reached among the G7 members but hoped for agreement to have a unified position. He noted that all sides need Netanyahu to make any deal. “We can also not agree with how his government has led the reaction after the massacre of Oct. 7, but now we have to deal with Netanyahu to arrive at peace in Lebanon, peace in Palestine,” Tajani said. Nathalie Tocci, director of the Rome-based Institute for International Affairs think tank, warned that inserting the ICC warrant into the G7 agenda was risky, since the U.S. is the lone member that is not a signatory to the court and yet tends to dictate the G7 line. “If Italy and the other (five G7) signatories of the ICC are unable to maintain the line on international law, they will not only erode it anyway but will be acting against our interests,” Tocci wrote in La Stampa daily this weekend, recalling Italy’s recourse to international law in demanding protection for Italian U.N. peacekeepers who have come under fire in southern Lebanon. The other major talking point of the G7 meeting is Ukraine , and tensions have only heightened since Russia attacked Ukraine last week with an experimental, hypersonic ballistic missile that escalated the nearly 33-month-old war. Russian President Vladimir Putin said the strike was retaliation for Kyiv’s use of U.S. and British longer-range missiles capable of striking deeper into Russian territory. The G7 has been at the forefront of providing military and economic support for Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in February 2022 and G7 members are particularly concerned about how a Trump administration will change the U.S. approach. Trump has criticized the billions of dollars that the Biden administration has poured into Ukraine and has said he could end the war in 24 hours, comments that appear to suggest he would press Ukraine to surrender territory that Russia now occupies. “It’s hugely important that this G7, that all colleagues across the G7 continue to stand with Ukraine for as long as it lasts,” British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said as he arrived. He announced new sanctions on vessels of Russia's “shadow fleet” of ships that are evading sanctions to export Russian oil. “And we are confident that Ukraine can have the funds and the military equipment and kit to get through 2025,” Lammy said. The G7 foreign ministers’ meeting, the second of the Italian presidency after ministers gathered in Capri in April , is being held in the medieval town of Fiuggi southeast of Rome, best known for its thermal spas. On Monday, which coincides with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, ministers were attending the inauguration of a red bench meant to symbolize Italy’s focus on fighting gender-based violence. Over the weekend, tens of thousands of people marched in Rome to protest gender-based violence , which in Italy so far this year has claimed the lives of 99 women, according to a report last week by the Eures think tank.

METAIRIE, La. (AP) — Dejounte Murray plans to return to the New Orleans Pelicans ' lineup on Wednesday night for the first time since fracturing his left hand in a season-opening victory over Chicago on Oct. 23. And when Murray takes the court against the Toronto Raptors , his mother will be on his mind. After practice on Tuesday, Murray discussed his impending return and disclosed more details about the previously unspecified “personal matters” that caused him to leave the team during the final days of the preseason. His mother had a stroke, he said. “It was tough to leave and go deal with that. As she got better, she wanted me to come play,” Murray said of his last-minute decision to start against Chicago. He added that his hand injury near the end of that game was God's way of telling him, “‘Nah, you need to stay with your mom.’” “I was more concerned about my mother. That was my priority,” Murray continued. “I wasn’t really worried about my recovery.” Murray's mother has recovered well, he said, while he is “healthy and ready to help this team.” “I’m ready to hoop. Play for my mother — she’s going to be watching," Murray said. “I’m ready to compete, bring that winning spirit.” The Pelicans (4-14) certainly could use the help, having lost 14 of 16 games since opening the season with a pair of victories. Injuries have ravaged the roster. At times, all five starters have been out. Star power forward Zion Williamson has missed 12 games this season — one with an illness and 11 with a hamstring injury. Herb Jones has been sidelined by a shoulder strain and Brandon Ingram's status is in doubt after he sat out practice on Tuesday with calf soreness that also sidelined him during a loss on Monday night at Indiana. But at least two starters — Murray and fellow guard CJ McCollum — are expected to play against the Raptors. “I don’t care how many games we’ve lost. I just know every time I step on the floor I feel like we can win games,” said Murray, who had 14 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds in his lone game with the Pelicans. "That’s just my mentality, and I feel like it can carry over to a lot of guys.” AP NBA: https://apnews.com/hub/NBA

ST. LOUIS COUNTY — A lawsuit filed this week blames a flawed load of lumber and an improperly mounted forklift for a fiery crash in May that killed a mother and her two young daughters on the first day of summer break. The suit describes details of the crash that were not previously released, including the chaotic scene of bystanders trying to rescue 8-year-old Kenzi Brooks, who was stuck in the car as it went up in flames. The crash happened at about 7:30 a.m. May 24. The girls' mother, Michelle Yaeger, was driving them in a 1998 GMC Yukon along the ramp connecting northbound Interstate 55 to Interstate 270 in St. Louis County. As traffic stopped ahead of her, the lawsuit says, she attempted to pull into the median between the interstate and the off-ramp to avoid colliding with the car in front of her. Instead, she crashed into the back of a truck carrying lumber, which had pulled over into the same median after its driver thought his load was unsecure, the suit says. She and Kenzi died at the scene. "Their bodies were pinned in the 1998 GMC Yukon in such a way that they had to be extracted from the vehicle after the vehicle was towed away from the scene of the collision," the lawsuit says. Kenzi's 10-year-old sister, Natalie Brooks, died at a hospital. Initial reporting said Natalie was not wearing a seatbelt. Monday's lawsuit says Natalie and Kenzi were both properly restrained. The family lived in the Lemay area of St. Louis County. Monday's suit was filed by Yaeger's surviving son, Brendan Yaeger, and the girls' father, Kenneth Brooks. He and Yaeger were no longer in a relationship when the crash happened. They sued the lumber truck driver, David Frazier, and several companies: Frazier's employer, Wil-Sites Truck Lines; HIAB USA, Inc., which manufactures and sells certain trailer-mounted forklifts and mounting systems under the name Moffett; and 84 Lumber Company, which loaded the lumber that was on the truck's trailer. Brooks and Brendan Yaeger's attorney did not respond to a request for comment. Neither did representatives of the three companies. The 39-page suit says the lumber was not secured correctly on the truck bed; the forklift was improperly mounted to the back of the bed; and the driver had not correctly marked the back of the truck with a flag. That left the forklift hanging over the back of the truck bed, the suit describes, exposing the fuel filter and fuel lines to "rupturing and spilling fuel when the subject forklift is involved in a rear impact collision." When Yaeger's Yukon hit the back of the truck, the forklift crashed into the Yukon's hood, windshield and dashboard, pinning Yaeger and Kenzi between their respective seats and the front dashboard. Then the forklift erupted in flames and consumed the Yukon, the suit says. Multiple bystanders tried to help, the suit says. Some talked to Kenzi. Others tried to get Yaeger and Kenzi out of the SUV. One bystander even used a chain and his vehicle to separate the Yukon and the forklift. But the Yukon kept burning. The suit blames the lumber company for not securing the load of wood properly, which caused Frazier to pull over in the first place. It also noted Frazier broke state law by driving in the left lane of the off-ramp; trucks that weigh more than 48,000 pounds are prohibited from driving in the left lanes of highways. The suit also says the forklift was protruding more than 6 feet off the end of the truck, but Missouri law allows an overhang maximum of 4 feet. The suit says the deaths could have been avoided. "Alternative designs were and are both technologically and economically feasible," the lawsuit says, "that would have prevented the injuries suffered by decedents by either changing the location where the subject forklift was transported, improving the rear structure of the subject forklift, or improving the fuel tank, fuel filter, and fuel lines of the subject forklift."Ireland's election is over, but the country faces weeks of talks before there's a government

Article content No surprise that No. 97 is leading the NHL in points, or very close to the top. Happens every season, right? Like the brightest star coming out at night. But it’s not Connor McDavid . It’s currently Kirill Kaprizov. Now, McDavid, who has won the Art Ross trophy five times, could still reel in the Minnesota Wild winger by Christmas — he’s picked up 100 places in the points race, the last few weeks—but Kaprizov is second with 33 points in 18 games, one back of Colorado’s Nate MacKinnon, the reigning Hart trophy winner. He went into the Edmonton Oilers game Thursday with 13 goals and 20 assists, also plus 17. Kaprizov, who certainly is in the MVP conversation, leads or co-leads the NHL in points-per-game (1.83), has 27 primary points and 19 even-strength and has more three-point games, six, than scoreless ones, three. He’s on pace for 150 points, but if you ask the 27-year-old Russian if he likes the test of going against McDavid, who has 24 points, frankly a megastar who lives in another orbit, he demurs about that stuff. But his coach John Hynes doesn’t. He says there’s a “He’s good, I’m good” factor. “The top guys, in my experience, it’s about the competitive level. There’s a respect there to be able to test themselves,” said Hynes. “That’s why the guys at the top of the league are extreme competitors, they like the challenge of playing each other.” “Like I saw where MacKinnon was disappointed that (Alex) Ovechkin wasn’t going to be playing (in the Avs-Caps game Thursday) because he’s out,” said Hynes. But, Kaprizov downplayed the mano-o-mano aspect. “I like playing against everyone,” said Kaprizov. “He’s a star, one of the best players in the league, but every team has star players.” What does he wish he had that McDavid has? “He’s one of the best players, how I say, in the world, he’s fast, good hands. Everything,” he said. But Kaprizov can wheel, too. “No, I’m slow,” he said, with a laugh. He’s far from that. “I don’t like to talk about my game. You guys can talk about it. I don’t like to say something good or not so good. I just play,” said Kaprizov, 27. But, he one of the starriest athlete in the Twin Cities area. He gets recognized, out for dinner, or out getting a coffee. The attention is polite and welcome. “I don’t care (about posing for cellphone photos, autographs, chats). I was this way when I was younger, too. I wanted pictures of players, or the signings. It’s nice when kids know you,” he said. “There were players on my team, growing up, players you would not know, but it was important for me to see them out in the life, not just on TV.” Now, everybody wants to see Kaprizov, who was drafted in the fifth-round in 2015 but didn’t come over to the NHL until 2020. He is a dog-on-bone, wanting-the-puck player, coming out of traffic with it. Big shot, clever, worker. Not McDavid quick, but quick enough, with a skating style like Sidney Crosby, like Doug Weight had here in his Oilers days. Where did he learn that? “Playing for Ufa, from (teammate Teemu) Hartikainen. I think he played in Edmonton,” said Kaprizov, of the big-body Finnish winger who was an Oilers sixth-round draft pick in 2008, a very good AHL scorer who got into 50 NHL games before he left North America far too soon and returned to Europe where he’s been a star in Russia, and now at 34, playing in Switzerland. Former NHLer Wes Walz, who had 54 goals in 56 games for the WHL Lethbridge Hurricanes in his last year of junior, played 607 games in the show, was an assistant coach in Tampa for the Lightning, and now works on the Wild broadcast, was once a checking centre and knows a special talent when he sees one. “Kirill can score off the rush. But where he does his damage is down below the dots. He reminds me of Crosby, with his footwork below the goal line,” said Walz. “You watch him in a puck battle and he’ll come up with the loose puck and you’ll think how did he just get six feet of separation? What just happened? It’s his footwork, the skating thing. It’s not next-level skating, but it’s different. It allows him to win pucks all over the ice. He does play a 200-foot game.” Walz appreciates all the stars because he used to have to try and check them, and he especially likes the stars who aren’t one-trick ponies — all offence, all the time. Walz loves MacKinnon’s game as he tromps through the neutral zone and he plays both ends, but a quarter of the way through the schedule, Kaprizov has shown to be great with the puck and very sound without it. “I know Nathan MacKinnon is leading the league in scoring but he’s plus-two. You watch Kirill in his own zone, on the wall. As a former player you don’t get impressed with a lot but when you watch this guy play, it’s very inspiring,” said Walz. Walz was a teammate of Marian Gaborik, the first superstar for the Wild. He was a dynamic talent, but Kaprizov is a cut above with 108- and 96-point seasons. Gaborik’s high in points was 83. “We had a game-breaker with Marian but this is a different level. Marian had straight-line speed, powerful, kind of reminded me of a Pavel Bure,” said Walz. “But Kirill hounds the puck, second and third opportunities.” It’s so hard to get a superstar on an NHL team, and not just be a worker-bee group. Kaprizov doesn’t kill penalties — no sense blocking a shot and breaking a bone — but he’s sound enough defensively and reads the offensive tendencies so well that he’s also on the ice in the last minute, protecting a one-goal lead. Like McDavid, like Leon Draisaitl here. Kaprizov is one of the 10 best players in the NHL. “You guys here haven’t had to worry about that (star power). We knew how we had to play in this organization for years. We knew the best two offensive players were on the other team every night. You wouldn’t see them most of the night, you would be checking the hell out of them, they would get half a chance and you lose 3-1 or 3-2. Now, Kirlll is the game-breaker,” said Walz..” Walz always played hard and responsibly. But when the surpremely gifted ones have that worker gene, too, look out. “What I didn’t know about Kiril before coming over from Russia was his desire to be great. It’s like what you guys watch every day. There’s a lot of great players who don’t have that desire. He’s the first guy on the ice, you have to kick him off after practice. Some nights he plays 23-24 minutes.” “He has that goofy gene where he can do something at the end of a shift, kind of reminds me of Leon where you’re thinking he can’t get much done here after an 80 seconds on the ice, and all of a sudden he’ll protect the puck and get to the middle of the ice,” said Walz.

New Delhi, December 22: Google does not agree with the decision of the Department of Justice (DOJ) lawsuit on how search engines are distributed. The company plans to appeal to the decision of the DOJ search distribution lawsuit. The DOJ's proposal suggests significant changes, including the potential sale of Google Chrome and restrictions on agreements with partners. In response, Google has offered its own remedies proposal. Google stated, "DOJ filed a proposal reflecting an interventionist agenda. Its proposal goes far beyond what the Court’s decision is actually about our agreements with partners to distribute search." Google is putting together a proposal for remedies as the legal process requires both sides to explain what solutions they think would be appropriate in response to the court's ruling, which is scheduled for April 2025. Google Releases Android 16 2nd Developer Preview Update; Check Details. The tech giant said, "People don't use Google because they have to, they use it because they want to." The DOJ believed that Google's investments in Chrome, the development of AI, the way Google searches the web, or how it creates algorithms could be seen as unfair competition. However, the DOJ did not choose to pursue those cases. Google pointed out that the DOJ's proposal would negatively impact American consumers and weaken the US position as a leader in global technology at a crucial time. It would force Google to share users' private search queries with foreign and domestic competitors, and it would limit their ability to innovate and improve their products. Google has submitted its proposal, which is based on the actual findings from the court's decision regarding its search distribution contracts. The proposal aims to ensure that web browsers can continue to provide Google Search to their users and also earn revenue from that partnership. GOOGLE is ramping up its push into smart glasses and augmented reality headgear, taking on rivals Apple and Meta with help from its sophisticated Gemini artificial intelligence. The internet titan on Thursday unveiled an Android XR operating system created in a collaboration with Samsung, which will use it in a device being built in what is called internally “Project Moohan,” according to Google. The software is designed to power augmented and virtual reality experiences enhanced with artificial intelligence, XR vice-president Shahram Izadi said in a blog post. “With headsets, you can effortlessly switch between being fully immersed in a virtual environment and staying present in the real world,” Izadi said. “You can fill the space around you with apps and content, and with Gemini, our AI assistant, you can even have conversations about what you’re seeing or control your device.” Google this week announced the launch of Gemini 2.0, its most advanced artificial intelligence model to date, as the world’s tech giants race to take the lead in the fast-developing technology. CEO Sundar Pichai said the new model would mark what the company calls “a new agentic era” in AI development, with AI models designed to understand and make decisions about the world around you. Android XR infused with Gemini promises to put digital assistants into eyewear, tapping into what users are seeing and hearing. An AI “agent,” the latest Silicon Valley trend, is a digital helper that is supposed to sense surroundings, make decisions, and take actions to achieve specific goals. “Gemini can understand your intent, helping you plan, research topics and guide you through tasks,” Izadi said. “Android XR will first launch on headsets that transform how you watch, work and explore.” The Android XR release was a preview for developers so they can start building games and other apps for headgear, ideally fun or useful enough to get people to buy the hardware. This is not Google’s first foray into smart eyewear. Its first offering, Google Glass, debuted in 2013 only to be treated as an unflattering tech status symbol and met with privacy concerns due to camera capabilities. The market has evolved since then, with Meta investing heavily in a Quest virtual reality headgear line priced for mainstream adoption and Apple hitting the market with pricey Vision Pro “spacial reality” gear. Google plans to soon begin testing prototype Android XR-powered glasses with a small group of users. Google will also adapt popular apps such as YouTube, Photos, Maps, and Google TV for immersive experiences using Android XR, according to Izadi. Gemini AI in glasses will enable tasks like directions and language translations, he added. “It’s all within your line of sight, or directly in your ear,” Izadi said. New Delhi: India and Kuwait elevated their ties to a ‘Strategic Partnership’ Sunday, along with a memorandum of understanding in defence, as well as agreements in culture and sports during the two-day visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Gulf country also joined the India-led International Solar Alliance (ISA) as a member. “This MoU [on defence cooperation] will institutionalise bilateral cooperation in the area of defence. Key areas of cooperation would include training, exchange of personnel and experts, joint exercises, cooperation in defence industry, supply of defence equipment and collaboration in research and development,” said Arun Kumar Chatterjee, Secretary (Consular and Diaspora) in the Ministry of Exchange Affairs (MEA) during a special media briefing. The agreement in defence cooperation was in the works for a while, before being signed during Modi’s visit to the West Asian country. The two-day visit by Modi is the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Kuwait in 43 years. The PM met with the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah Sunday morning. Subsequently, he held a meeting with Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah followed by delegation- level talks with his Kuwait counterpart Ahmad Al-Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah. During the meeting with the Amir, Modi was conferred with the Order of Mubarak Al-Kabeer, the highest national award of Kuwait. This is the Indian PM’s 20th foreign award. The Order of Mubarak Al-Kabeer instituted in 1974 has since been conferred on select global leaders including the late Queen Elizabeth II to name a few. The Amir of Kuwait “expressed” his appreciation for “India’s role as a valued partner in Kuwait and the Gulf Region.” The two prime ministers discussed a “roadmap to strengthen the strategic partnership” in areas such as trade, political, investments, energy, defence, security, health, education, technology, culture and education, according to Chatterjee. Also Read: Energy, defence, & economic deals on Modi’s Kuwait agenda as past friction points take backseat The two leaders also looked at ways to expand the economic cooperation between their countries. India is one of Kuwait’s largest trading partners, with bilateral trade in goods touching $10.47 billion in 2023-24. Kuwait is India’s sixth largest exporter of crude petroleum, accounting for 3 percent of its energy needs. According to the MEA, there is also around $10 billion worth of investments by Kuwait in the Indian economy. Modi invited the Kuwaiti Investment Authority to visit India to look at opportunities in investing in areas such as defence, energy, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, food parks among other sectors. The two countries have had historic ties, with the Indian rupee being the legal tender in the country till 1961. However, since the 1990-1991 Gulf War, ties had hit a rough patch over India’s support for Saddam Hussein and Iraq. Over the last three decades, ties have slowly strengthened. Kuwait is the last country within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) for Modi to visit, having visited Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and the UAE earlier during his tenure. Kuwait is the current chair of the GCC. On ties between India and the GCC, Chatterjee said, “In general the two sides discussed cooperation between India and the Gulf Cooperation Council, for which Kuwait is now the chair...We look forward to very intense cooperation between India and the GCC, through Kuwait’s chairmanship.” As a part of the two-day visit, Modi also visited a labour camp in Mina Abdullah Saturday and interacted with the roughly 1,500 Indian workforce living in the camp. There are around one million Indians living in Kuwait, making up 21 percent of the nation’s population and 30 percent of its workforce. Modi thanked the Amir of Kuwait for “looking after” the Indian community during their bilateral meeting. Earlier in June, a fire in living quarters of labourers in the Mangaf area, left at least 41 Indians dead. The prime minister addressed an event Saturday evening with the Indian community living in Kuwait and was the guest of honour for the inaugural match of the Arabian Gulf Cup. roulette in casino By SAMY MAGDY CAIRO — Famine is spreading in Sudan due to a war between the military and a notorious paramilitary group that has devastated the country and created the world’s largest displacement crisis, a global hunger monitoring group said Tuesday. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, or IPC, said it detected famine in five areas, including in Sudan’s largest displacement camp, Zamzam , in North Darfur province, where famine was found for the first time in August. The report said the war has triggered unprecedented mass displacement and a collapsing economy. It said hostilities can result in farmers abandoning their crops, looting and stock destruction. (AP Photo/Marwan Ali, File) Along with the Zamzam camp, which has more than 400,000 people, famine was also detected in two other camps for displaced people, Abu Shouk and al-Salam in North Darfur, and the Western Nuba Mountains, the IPC report said. Five other areas in North Darfur are projected “with reasonable evidence” to experience famine in the next six months, including el-Fasher, the provincial capital of North Darfur, it said. Seventeen areas in the Nuba Mountains and the northern and southern areas of Darfur are at risk of famine, it added. The report also said some areas in the capital, Khartoum, and the east-central province of Gezira “may be experiencing” famine-like conditions. It said experts were unable to confirm whether famine threshold has been surpassed due to lack of data. “It is not merely a lack of food but a profound breakdown of health, livelihoods and social structures, leaving entire communities in a state of desperation,” it said. There is widespread hunger, with food in markets scarce and prices high. Aid groups say they struggle to reach the most vulnerable as warring parties limit access, especially in North Darfur province. Ahead of the IPC’s report, Sudan’s government said it had suspended its participation in the global monitoring system, according to a senior United Nations official with knowledge of the move. In a letter dated Dec. 23, Agriculture Minister Abu Baker al-Beshri accused the IPC of “issuing unreliable reports that undermine Sudan’s sovereignty and dignity,” said the U.N. official, who spoke in condition of anonymity to discuss the letter. Sudan’s 20-month war has killed more than than 24,000 people and driven over 14 million people — about 30% of the population — from their homes, according to the United Nations. An estimated 3.2 million Sudanese have crossed into neighboring countries including Chad, Egypt and South Sudan. The war began in April 2023 when tensions between its military and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces exploded into fighting in Khartoum before spreading to other areas. The conflict has been marked by atrocities including ethnically motivated killing and rape, according to the U.N. and rights groups. The International Criminal Court is investigating alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. Dervla Cleary, a senior emergency and rehabilitation officer at the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization, said 638,000 people are experiencing famine. “The situation in Sudan is just awful. It is unacceptable in a world like today,” she said. The IPC report called for a ceasefire, calling it the only way to reduce the risk of famine spreading further.” Sudan is the third country where famine was declared in the past 15 years, along with South Sudan and Somalia. The IPC comprises more than a dozen U.N. agencies, aid groups and governments that use its monitoring as a global reference for analysis of food and nutrition crises. The organization has also warned that large parts of Gaza’s Palestinian population face the threat of famine.I'm not sure there is another team in the NFL that needs a bye week as badly as the Houston Texans do. Luckily for them, they have one coming up after their next game with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Now, that's not the reason they lost to the Tennessee Titans, but it certainly isn't helping. Against the Titans, they were already without a few key players. Of course, another injury happened during the game, giving the Texans some more bad news to report. Last week, before their game against the Dallas Cowboys , the Texans called up practice squad cornerback Ka'dar Hollman to help their depth. He became CB2 on the day. And, he played pretty well in that game. On Sunday against the Titans, he got hurt. #Texans CB Ka'dar Hollman tore his ACL on Sunday and will miss the remainder of the season. Per @AaronWilson_NFL Prayers up. pic.twitter.com/DTKr9SNBJK According to Texans insider Aaron Wilson, Hollman will miss the remainder of the 2024 season. The Texans will either call up more cornerbacks from the practice squad, or they will go out and sign one. There are some good ones out there in the free agent market, too, so we will just have to wait and see what general manager Nick Caserio does. The Jacksonville Jaguars have some good receivers, despite Christian Kirk being out. So, they will need the help in the secondary, especially now that Jalen Pitre is out, too, with a pretty big pec injury that could keep him out for some time. And while Pitre is a safety, he had been playing a lot of nickel, and he'd been playing well there, too. After the game against the Jags, the Texans have a bye week, and then their final stretch is tough against the Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs , and the Baltimore Ravens before they play the Tennessee Titans again. Senator Abaribe welcomes arrest of Simon EkpaBOSTON — Forty years ago, Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie rolled to his right and threw a pass that has become one of college football’s most iconic moments. With Boston College trailing defending champion Miami, Flutie threw the Hail Mary and found receiver Gerard Phalen, who made the grab while falling into the end zone behind a pair of defenders for a game-winning 48-yard TD. Flutie and many of his 1984 teammates were honored on the field during BC’s 41-21 victory over North Carolina before the second quarter on Saturday afternoon, the anniversary of the Eagles’ Miracle in Miami. “There’s no way its been 40 years,” Flutie told The Associated Press on the sideline a few minutes before he walked out with some of his former teammates to be recognized after a video of The Play was shown on the scoreboards. A statue commemorating Doug Flutie's famed "Hail Mary" pass during a game against Miami on Nov. 23, 1994, sits outside Alumni Stadium at Boston College. Famous football plays often attain a legendary status with religious names like the "Immaculate Reception," the "Hail Mary" pass and the Holy Roller fumble. It’s a moment and highlight that’s not only played throughout decades of BC students and fans, but around the college football world. “What is really so humbling is that the kids 40 years later are wearing 22 jerseys, still,” Flutie said of his old number. “That amazes me.” That game was played on national TV the Friday after Thanksgiving. The ironic thing is it was originally scheduled for earlier in the season before CBS paid Rutgers to move its game against Miami, thus setting up the BC-Miami post-holiday matchup. Boston College quarterback Doug Flutie rejoices in his brother Darren's arms after B.C. defeats Miami with a last second touchdown pass on Nov. 23, 1984, in Miami. “It shows you how random some things are, that the game was moved,” Flutie said. “The game got moved to the Friday after Thanksgiving, which was the most watched game of the year. We both end up being nationally ranked and up there. All those things lent to how big the game itself was, and made the pass and the catch that much more relevant and remembered because so many people were watching.” There’s a statue of Flutie winding up to make The Pass outside the north gates at Alumni Stadium. Fans and visitors can often be seen taking photos there. “In casual conversation, it comes up every day,” Flutie said, when asked how many times people bring it up. “It brings a smile to my face every time we talk about it.” A week after the game-ending Flutie pass, the Eagles beat Holy Cross and before he flew off to New York to accept the Heisman. They went on to win the 49th Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Day. Boston College quarterback Doug Flutie evades Miami defensive tackle Kevin Fagan during the first quarter of a game on Nov. 23, 1984, in Miami, Fla. “Forty years seem almost like incomprehensible,” said Phalen, also standing on the sideline a few minutes after the game started. “I always say to Doug: ‘Thank God for social media. It’s kept it alive for us.”’ Earlier this week, current BC coach Bill O’Brien, 55, was asked if he remembered where he was 40 years ago. “We were eating Thanksgiving leftovers in my family room,” he said. “My mom was saying a Rosary in the kitchen because she didn’t like Miami and wanted BC to win. My dad, my brother and I were watching the game. “It was unbelievable,” he said. “Everybody remembers where they were for the Hail Mary, Flutie pass.” Mike Tyson, left, slaps Jake Paul during a weigh-in ahead of their heavyweight bout, Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024, in Irving, Texas. yes or no roulette Nearly half of low-income families do not use social fund support for their children. This is evident from research that ABN Amro conducted together with the Youth Fund for Sport & Culture. Approximately 1.2 million people have to survive on an income around the poverty line. They may, therefore, be eligible for support for additional expenses for their children, for things like sports and cultural activities. However, almost half of the families do not use this. People with work and a low income are especially reluctant to ask for support. Uncertainty about the application criteria and shame in asking for help play an important role, according to the researchers. Many parents also fear complicated procedures and think that the money may have to be repaid. People on benefits or social assistance often ask for support. Funds that parents can call on include the Leergeld Foundation, the Youth Sports & Culture Fund, and the Jarige Job Foundation. According to the researchers, it is noticeable that once people use a fund, the threshold for applying to other social funds becomes lower. For example, 15 percent of families have applied for a facility from two and 19 percent from three or more funds.

Seattle Seahawks receiver is DK Metcalf is just fine when he doesn't have the the ball because it means he gets to showcase his blocking skills. “I just look at it as a sign of respect that I’ve gained from other defensive coordinators and just continue to do my job with it as blocking or being a decoy,” the two-time Pro Bowler said. While opposing defenses have keyed in on Metcalf, other aspects of Seattle's offense have surfaced during its four-game winning streak. The run has the Seahawks (8-5) sitting atop the NFC West heading into Sunday night's game against the visiting Green Bay Packers (9-4). Geno Smith's new top target is second-year receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who needs 89 receiving yards for his first career 1,000-yard season. Smith-Njigba has 75 catches for 911 yards and five touchdowns, while Metcalf, often dealing with double coverage, has 54 catches for 812 yards and two scores. Metcalf says he feels the pride of a “proud parent or a big brother” when it comes to Smith-Njigba's success. Seattle's offense also got a boost from the ground game in a 30-18 victory over the Arizona Cardinals last weekend . Zach Charbonnet, filling in for the injured Kenneth Walker III, ran for a career-best 134 yards and two touchdowns. The Seahawks face another hot team in the Packers (9-4), who have won seven of nine. Green Bay's two losses over that stretch have come against NFC-best Detroit (12-1), including a 34-31 victory by the Lions on Dec. 5, which means the NFC North title is likely out of reach for the Packers. The Packers are well-positioned for a playoff berth, but that almost certainly won't come this weekend. They would need a win, a loss or tie by the Atlanta Falcons and a tie between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers. Metcalf, who learned to block from his father, former Chicago Bears offensive lineman Terrence Metcalf, says he tries to take blocking seriously to set himself apart from other receivers. His priorities are simple when he's getting double-teamed and the ball goes elsewhere. “Trying to block my (butt) off and trying to get pancakes on defensive backs,” he said. When the Packers surged their way into the playoffs last season, quarterback Jordan Love was a major reason why. He had 18 touchdown passes and one interception during Green Bay's final eight games. During the last four games of this season, Love ranks third in the NFL with a 118.9 passer rating with six touchdowns, one interception and a league-best 10.3 yards per attempt. “I always feel like I can put the ball where I want to — and that’s part of it, too, having that confidence to be able to throw those passes,” Love said. “There’s always like I said a handful of plays that might not come off or be in the exact spot that you wanted it to or the throw might be a little bit off. So, that’s where you’ve just got to try to be at your best every play, be consistent and accurate as possible.” Green Bay’s pass defense has been picked apart the last two weeks. First, it was torched by Tua Tagovailoa and the Dolphins in a Packers win. Next, it allowed Jared Goff to complete his final 13 passes as the Lions rallied to victory. It won’t get any easier this week. Smith is second in the NFL in attempts, completions and passing yards and is fifth in completion percentage. “It’s been a remarkable turnaround for him in terms of just where he started,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said. “It’s not always where you start, but where you finish. And it tells me a lot about the person in terms of his resiliency and ability to fight through some adversity. He’s a dangerous quarterback.” The potential return of former All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander (knee) could help the Packers. Will the Packers break out their head-to-toe white uniforms? The last time Green Bay wore the winter white look was in a 24-22 win over Houston in October. The Packers asked fans to weigh in on social media . As for the Seahawks, they'll be sporting their “Action Green” uniforms. Metcalf is a fan. “I would say this about the Action Green, I love them personally in my opinion, but the big guys hate them. I don’t know why, don’t ask me," he said. “Hopefully, the Packers wear all white, so it’ll be a fun-looking game.” AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nflMaryam proposes Beijing-Punjab working group to combat pollution

TSMC Arizona has received support from the United States government to increase the nation’s production of semiconductor chips. The U.S. Department of Commerce announced on Nov. 15, 2024, that it signed a $6.6 billion grant agreement with TSMC Arizona via the CHIPS and Science Act , a 2022 bipartisan bill that aims to give the country an advantage in the global technology race. The CHIPS Program Office also approved up to $5 billion in loans for the subsidiary. The money will support TSMC Arizona’s build of three leading-edge fabrications, or semiconductor production facilities, in Phoenix over the next five years, with a total investment of more than $65 billion in the city. It’s the largest foreign direct investment in a greenfield project in United States history, and it’s expected to create tens of thousands of jobs by 2030 in both technical and nontechnical fields. TSMC Arizona’s new facilities represent not just an investment in the future of semiconductor technology, but also an investment in America’s computing infrastructure and power. “Today’s announcement is among the most critical milestones yet in the implementation of the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act and demonstrates how we are ensuring that the progress made to date will continue to unfold in the coming years, benefitting communities all across the country,” President Joe Biden said in the announcement . The administration seeks to re-cement the United States as a key player in the field. Semiconductors were invented in the United States more than a century ago, and its plants were once responsible for about 40% of worldwide production. But today, the nation only produces about 10% of the world’s supply, and none of the most advanced chips. TSMC Arizona aims to change that. “Entering this phase of the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act marks a pivotal step in strengthening the semiconductor ecosystem in the United States. TSMC appreciates the continued collaboration with customers, partners, local communities, and the U.S. government beginning in early 2020,” says TSMC Chairman and CEO Dr. C.C. Wei. “The signing of this agreement helps us to accelerate the development of the most advanced semiconductor manufacturing technology available in the U.S.” Ramping Up Semiconductor Production TSMC Arizona will be running the most advanced chipmaking technology on U.S. soil when the first fabrication plant begins volume production in early 2025. The chips TSMC Arizona will create on American soil will remake the technological landscape, helping the nation strengthen its competitiveness on the global stage. “The Biden-Harris administration’s investment in TSMC Arizona is a turning point for American innovation and manufacturing that will strengthen our economic and national security,” said U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo. “The leading-edge chips that will be manufactured in Arizona are foundational to the United States' technological and economic leadership in the 21st century.” The CHIPS and Science Act provides billions of dollars to boost American semiconductor research, manufacturing, and workforce development, including a 25% investment tax credit. It also funds wireless technologies using open radio access networks, advances in artificial intelligence and biotechnology, and the creation of regional innovation hubs. Additionally, it supports science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education at all levels and equips agencies to address gender- and race-based harassment in STEM fields. To date, the CHIPS for America program has awarded more than $10 billion — and allocated more than $36 billion in total proposed funding — to partners across 20 states. TSMC Arizona Takes the Lead TSMC leads the world in semiconductor manufacturing, creating more than 90% of the world’s most advanced logic chips. While this new $6.6 billion grant is vital to the company’s development plans, it actually began investing in the state’s future back in 2020, when it first announced the creation of TSMC Arizona and a $12 billion commitment to building its first U.S.-located advanced fabrication plant in the capital city. The first of several pieces of complex chipmaking tools arrived on-site in December 2022 — the same time the company announced that it would build a second facility — for a total investment of $40 billion. It also committed to constructing an industrial water reclamation plant on the 1,129-acre lot to support the company’s sustainability commitments with a 90% or better water recycling goal. By February 2024, more than 2,000 employees were already at work in the first facility, with thousands of construction workers on-site each day. Two months later, TSMC Arizona announced that it would open a third facility, bringing its total commitment in the state to $65 billion. Once they reach full capacity, TSMC Arizona’s three fabs will employ about 6,000 people helping to produce tens of millions of chips. According to an economic analysis by the Greater Phoenix Economic Council, this $65 billion investment will enable the creation of more than 20,000 unique construction jobs across all sites. Each of the TSMC Arizona fabs will specialize in a particular type of semiconductor chip. The first will use the company’s N4 process to produce chips primarily used in smart phones; early numbers show the fab’s output is already comparable to its facilities in Taiwan. The second will open in 2028 and use N3 and N2 process technology — currently the industry’s most advanced semiconductor technology in production — to produce chips used by the data centers that power AI. And the third — which was announced in conjunction with the new grant — will ramp up production on A16 chips and chips that use 2nm and even more advanced future process technology by the decade’s end, helping to improve performance and power consumption for high-performance computing applications. This innovation is already benefiting TSMC, with its stock price reaching a record high in October after the company outperformed its quarterly estimates and increased its revenue growth target for 2024. But the real benefit is for its American partners. “We are honored to support our customers who have been pioneers in mobile, artificial intelligence, and high-performance computing, whether in chip design, hardware systems or software, algorithms, and large language models,” said Wei. “They are the innovators driving demand for the most advanced silicon that TSMC can provide. As their foundry partner, we will help them unleash their innovations by increasing capacity for leading-edge technology through TSMC Arizona. We are thrilled by the progress of our Arizona site to date and are committed to its long-term success. ” *The San Francisco Examiner newsroom and editorial were not involved in the creation of this content.

World-record holding marathon runner Erchana Murray-Bartlett will run as an Independent for the long-held Liberal National Party (LNP) seat of McPherson in the upcoming 2025 election. The seat on the Gold Coast has been held by the LNP for decades and is considered a safe seat for the party. It’s currently held by the retiring Karen Andrews, a former Morrison government minister who first won the seat in 2010. Murray-Bartlett officially launched her campaign for the seat over the weekend, saying it was time to do politics differently. “I’ve been a passionate advocate, and now I’m ready to take that work to the national level, and give our community a strong, independent voice in Parliament,” Murray-Bartlett said. “I’m not your everyday politician. I want to do things differently. I will put our community first when it comes to the big issues,” she said, adding that when her community asked her to run, she knew she “had to step up”. “The seat of McPherson has been held by the same political party for over forty years. If I were elected as your representative, I would be accountable to you, not to a political party,” said Murray-Bartlett. “McPherson deserves a fresh approach to leadership, one that listens and truly represents our community. Together, we can build a better future, it’s time for change.” Last year, Murray-Bartlett pulled off the monumental feat of running across the length of Australia and racking up . She did it all to raise awareness and funds for Australia’s wildlife extinction crisis. Her fundraising saw more than $98,000 go towards the Wilderness Society. Now, with her announcement as an Independent candidate for McPherson, she’s ‘running’ for change again. Karen Andrews has been the LNP Member for McPherson for 14 years, and announced last year that she would not contest her seat in the 2025 election. In April this year, there was a Liberal National Party preselection vote for the Gold Coast seat, where four men– and not one woman– nominated to be the party’s next candidate. At the time, Andrews told that the Liberal Party tried to find women, but it was difficult with a lack of women in the Coalition or wanting to join. “I certainly approached a number of women but couldn’t get them across the line for a range of reasons,” , adding that women were reluctant to face the “constant criticism and constant, constant negativity”. Speaking to the about Murray-Bartlett’s run for the seat of McPherson, Andrews said: “I’ve been made aware of the candidate’s impressive background and congratulate her on her achievements to date.” “Communities deserve leadership that listens, understands and acts with integrity. Leadership is a long-term commitment to the community and more like a marathon than a sprint.” At the 2022 federal election, a number of female Independents won safe seats over the Liberal Party in areas across Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. The Kansas City Chiefs grinded out another nail biting victory in Week 12, as Spencer Shrader's game-winning 31-yard field goal gave them a 30-27 victory over the Carolina Panthers. And along the way, their head coach Andy Reid managed to achieve another ridiculous milestone. While the Panthers are one of the worst teams in the NFL, they played the Chiefs incredibly tough in this one, and tied the game at 27 late in the fourth quarter. Patrick Mahomes and the offense responded by driving down the field to set up Shrader, and he nailed the kick to secure Kansas City's 10th win of the season. In the process, it earned the legendary coach in Reid another season where he had won 10-plus games. In fact, this marked the 10th straight season where Reid's teams had won 10-plus games, which is another remarkable milestone in a career that has been full of them. A decade of double-digit wins. Congrats, Coach! pic.twitter.com/Im6soMQkYW Since taking over as the Chiefs head coach back in 2013, Reid has only had one season where his team won fewer than 10 games, and it came back in 2014 when they won nine. Since then, Kansas City has won at least 10 games in each of the past 10 seasons now. That sort of consistency simply cannot be taken for granted, especially when you win three Super Bowls along the way. With another 10-win campaign in the books, Reid and company can begin fully turning their attention towards going on a championship run for the third straight year. © Jim Dedmon-Imagn Images However, it's becoming clear that Kansas City is going to have to play better as a whole if they want to achieve their main goal on the year. They have 10 wins, but they have been forced to grind out wins in pretty much every one of their contests. Against tougher opponents, their margin for error won't be very high. 10 wins are 10 wins, though, and the Chiefs are in an enviable spot thanks to Reid's prowess. With another dub in the books, Kansas City will turn their attention to their Week 13 contest against the Las Vegas Raiders, which falls on Black Friday. Cover Five: With pressure rising, Matt Rhule delivers Nebraska a bowl bid in Year 2Every December, as it has since 1927 with Charles Lindbergh, Time magazine selects and features the most consequential Person of the Year (13 United States presidents, other world leaders, popes). Sometimes it has not been a person, as such, but a tectonic societal shift (the personal computer, the #MeToo movement). Donald Trump, just named Time’s 2024 Person of the Year , was first elevated to that title after his 2016 election victory. He is consequential because he has returned to power even after attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, even after supporting the insurrection on January 6, 2021, and notwithstanding being twice impeached and convicted of a felony. President-elect Donald Trump speaks during Time magazine’s Person of the Year announcement at the New York Stock Exchange. Credit: AP This year, no one else was on so many people’s minds as Trump. In Time’s judgment , Trump was “the person who had the greatest influence, for better or worse, on the events of the year”. Time might have conferred the accolade jointly on Trump and Elon Musk, given Musk’s astonishing fusion of more than $US250 million in campaign contributions with his dominance over his X platform to help make Trump president. If influence is power, Musk has it. With ceaseless hours at Trump’s side to help shape his presidency, and his establishment and funding of a Musk think tank that will generate edicts for Trump to impose to re-sculpt the government, Musk has effectively supplanted JD Vance to become Trump’s vice president. Musk’s power is second only to Trump’s. For the next two years, Trump will be at his zenith. He will never have to face the voters again, which means he can act with impunity as he makes decisions to advance Trumpism and all that he wants to accomplish. Trump’s Republican Party, which he now owns, controls both houses of Congress, so there will be no more impeachments. His attorney-general and chief of the FBI will go after his political enemies . His secretary of defence will ensure that his generals follow his orders – overseas and in the streets of America’s cities. Loading Public servants will take loyalty oaths or be purged. Trump will take money appropriated by the Congress away from programs he does not like and divert it to his priorities. On the world stage, Trump will present more like Putin, Xi and Orban than Starmer, Macron and Albanese. Trump has already broken the norm of the US having “one president at a time” with his pre-inaugural threats to Mexico, Canada and China on trade and his forays into concluding the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East on his terms. His first inaugural address eight years ago featured the dystopian theme of “American carnage”. We will see how deep he wallows in that dark pool on January 20, 2025. Immediately after his address, when he arrives in the Oval Office, Trump’s march through the first 100 days will formally begin. Political newsletter Axios reports that “Trump advisers are running out of words to describe what’s coming in January”. “They say he feels empowered and emboldened, vindicated and validated, and eager to stretch the boundaries of power.” Trump will sign dozens of executive orders repealing everything he can that Biden did with his executive démarches four years ago, such as on climate, abortion rights, immigration, gun control and student loans. Loading Trump’s nominees will face confirmation hearings and votes in the Senate. There will be firestorms around Kash Patel to head the FBI, who wants to close the FBI’s building, expel its agents around the country and prosecute Trump’s enemies; Robert Kennedy Jr as secretary of health and human services, who wants to take a baseball bat to how Anthony Fauci practises medicine, but is opposed by 75 Nobel laureates ; Pete Hegseth at Defence, under fire for sexual misconduct, alcohol abuse and financial mismanagement; and Tulsi Gabbard as director of national intelligence, who many see as an asset to Putin. Any who are knocked back will be replaced by other loyal Trumpists with the same mandates. They will do all that Trump wants. Trump will move to pardon and release from jail hundreds of his foot soldiers who stormed the Capitol on January 6. After Biden’s pardon of his son Hunter, Trump will not even be singed by the critics. Trump will begin the detention and process of deporting hundreds of thousands of immigrants across the country. He will unveil legislation to get his budget, close the borders, cut taxes and fight over the public debt limit to avoid a default of the United States. Loading Trump will begin to implement his campaign promises – over and above the threats against Mexico, Canada and China – to impose across-the-board tariffs of up to 20 per cent on all goods coming into the US and up to 60 per cent for imports from China. Will Australia be in these crosshairs? There is absolutely no basis on which Trump’s tariffs on Australia can be justified. Trump loves a trade surplus. Australia has a structural trade deficit with the US. Australia has a free trade agreement with the US. New higher tariffs are incompatible with the letter and spirit of that trade pact. But there is a real threat here. Trump has just ripped up the trade agreement he negotiated in his first term with Canada and Mexico. If Trump can do that to those allies he can do it to Australia. This could be the first hard test in the Australia-US, Albanese-Trump relationship. Trump – let’s call him Person of the Century, so far – is on a high. The year ahead will be savage. The waves of Trump’s first 100 days will hit Australia’s shores too. Bruce Wolpe is a senior fellow at the University of Sydney’s United States Studies Centre. From the season’s outset, Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said Minnesota would leave itself the flexibility to close games with whatever lineup the coaching staff felt was needed to secure a victory. ADVERTISEMENT Sometimes, he noted, he’d get the choice right. Surely, there would be other times when he wouldn’t. “Hopefully, I do way more than I don’t,” Finch said this week. Sunday evening, however, was a checkmark in the “not right” column, at least based off the result. The Timberwolves didn’t score in the final 4:47 of their loss to Golden State. Finch said this week that Mike Conley’s inclusion in the closing lineup would’ve added organization to the equation. But he was quick to add that, with the ill-advised shots Anthony Edwards was taking, may not have mattered. ADVERTISEMENT Finch also reiterated what he said after the game, that Nickeil Alexander-Walker was playing “so well,” so he was hesitant to take him off the floor. “Maybe the other thing I could’ve done was go small,” Finch said, “but we’ve not really done that a ton.” That was the cry of many Wolves’ followers on social media on Sunday. Minnesota has proven rather inept at late-game offense when Conley isn’t on the floor. But all recognized Alexander-Walker had also earned the opportunity to close. You certainly won’t take Edwards off the floor in those situations, and the Wolves wanted Jaden McDaniels on the floor to guard Steph Curry. That left Julius Randle and Rudy Gobert as the only options to take off the court in favor of Conley, and that would’ve left Minnesota small. And, as Finch noted, the Wolves simply haven’t gone small this season. Like, at all. None of Naz Reid, Randle or Gobert have played more than 17 minutes this season without another big man next to him. ADVERTISEMENT It’s not something the Wolves practice, either. McDaniels said he’s only repped minutes at the four in practice when one of the bigs have been unavailable. Still, Finch said it wasn’t that he was “uncomfortable” rolling out a small-ball look Sunday. “But I worry a lot about rebounding. We struggle to rebound with our bigger lineups, at times. So, I know our smaller lineups have really struggled,” Finch said. “That’s some of the reason not to go small is really rebounding issues. But I think our guys are comfortable playing in all different combinations. But I haven’t really thought about going small, necessarily.” ADVERTISEMENT Indeed, Minnesota is just 12th in the NBA this season in defensive rebounding rate, grabbing 71.3% of opposing missed shots. The glass was especially an issue Sunday, as Golden State grabbed 14 offensive rebounds that led to 19 second-chance points. But it’s worth noting many of those came by guards in situations in which size was no factor on the play. McDaniels said he’s comfortable playing any position, including the power forward slot. And Minnesota certainly has the wing depth to roll out more small ball lineups if the situation ever called for it. There could be a playoff matchup that does just that, though Finch noted it could also go the other direction where the Wolves’ advantage would be to lean bigger. Versatility rules come April and May. But the Wolves don’t seem overly urgent to trot out any small-ball looks just to see how they perform at this juncture in the campaign. ADVERTISEMENT “Usually, it’s better with Naz at the four (than me),” McDaniels said. There is, however, at least one proponent of doing a little experimenting: Conley. “I think (small ball) kind of promotes a different level of spacing and speed to the game. You’re going to have to rely on guard-guard situations, guard pick and rolls,” Conley said. “Maybe me setting the screen and roll, Just creating different advantages for ourselves, as opposed to our typical offense or typical flow of things. I would love to see it, maybe — see how it works.” ADVERTISEMENT ______________________________________________________ This story was written by one of our partner news agencies. Snow pants are highly technical pieces of apparel. They’re designed more for practical outdoor use than they are for earning style points. For those who like to get out and about in the winter season, you’ll need a quality pair to keep you warm. They use waterproof exteriors along with insulated interiors to protect your legs from wet snow and cool temperatures. The best pair is the THE NORTH FACE Sally Pants . Their thick exterior protects you from the wind and snow and their DryVent ventilation system releases excess body heat. There are three types of snow pants . The most common type resembles your everyday pair of pants. Aside from the technical materials, the main difference is that they have a looser fit than normal pants. Snow pants are ideal for maximum mobility when skiing or snowboarding. Some bibs resemble overalls. They have an upper body portion connected to the pants and use straps to go over the shoulders. This gives you more protection from the elements, but it slightly restricts your movement. Then there are one-piece snowsuits, which have a coat and pants in a single slip-on piece. The best material used to make snow pants is polyester. It’s durable, water-resistant and inexpensive. Polyester is the material that makes up the bulk of a pair of snow pants. Many manufacturers will add nylon for even more long-term strength. There’s also elastic, which is used in ankle gaiters and some waistbands. Gore-Tex is another material used in many outdoor products like snow pants because it’s completely water-resistant. Snow pants are sized differently than normal pants. Instead of using numbers, they use small to large distinctions. This makes it easier because they’re sized more generally than your everyday pair of pants. Most brands go from XS to XXL, but some include more variations, such as large long and large short. This way, you can customize your fit based on your body type. Other brands will use inseam measurements if you know exactly how long you’d prefer the pants to be. Boot gaiters are sections of fabric that provide more security around the ankle. Walking through snow can cause your socks to get wet. This is not only uncomfortable but can also affect your body’s temperature. Gaiters use elastic to wrap tightly around your ankle while the exterior of your pants goes over your boots. Some pants have a reinforced seam and patches on the pant leg to prevent wear and tear around the ankle. This will also protect your ankles from bumps and bruises while on the slopes. Baggy snow pants are the best choice if you’re snowboarding or skiing. With more room between your legs and the exterior fabric, you can comfortably wear a pair of insulated tights underneath. Baggy pants also allow for more freedom of movement. With skiing, especially, you’ll need all the flexibility your legs can get. Loose-fitting pants will prevent seams from ripping too easily as well. Professional snowboarders and skiers who focus on tricks will exclusively wear baggy snow pants to give them more mobility. While snow pants are designed to keep you warm, sometimes, the heat can cause sweat to build up around your legs. For this reason, some pants come with built-in ventilation systems. These specially designed vents are woven into the pants and release excess heat. The vent is usually on the rear waist area. This positioning makes it discreet to the naked eye. Also, your coat will cover it most of the time, which prevents any cold air from entering from the outside. Women’s snow pants cost $30-$260. A. GORE-TEX is known for its waterproofing, but the ultra-tight weaves and thick fabric make it windproof as well. A. Most snow pants have two sets of pockets on either hip. They are usually sealed using zippers to keep your belongings protected. THE NORTH FACE Sally Pants What you need to know: These high-quality snow pants from North Face use thick materials to keep you dry. What you’ll love: The pants have a snug fit around the knees with a slight flare at the ankles. There’s a DryVent to prevent your legs from sweating and Heatseeker Eco insulation to protect you from the elements. There are zippered pockets, a belt loop around the waist and boot gaiters near the ankles. What you should consider: The waistband is not as adjustable as other pants. Arctix Insulated Cargo Snow Pants What you need to know: Arctix has the most customizable snow pants with a large selection of colors and sizes. Two leading Welsh charities have called for urgent action to tackle child poverty. Barnardo’s Cymru and the Bevan Foundation have joined forces to highlight the plight of families with young children. Their research shows that more than half of children living in poverty in Wales are in families with at least one child aged 0–4. The charities have identified the birth of a baby as a key factor in reducing household income while increasing costs. Low maternity pay, the low value of social security benefits, and rising costs of essentials further exacerbate the situation, pushing families with young children into poverty. Sarah Rowe, a children’s services manager at Barnardo’s, said: "I have never seen things this bad. "Parents are often reluctant to admit just how bad things are as they feel ashamed, they cannot feed and clothe their children or keep them warm. "Only when we visit the home do we discover just how much they are struggling." She described seeing children sleeping on mouldy mattresses, broken beds, or even on the floor due to their parents' inability to afford proper bedding. The Welsh Government has committed to eradicating child poverty and has extended free school meals to primary school pupils. However, the charities argue that very little is targeted at younger children. Dr Victoria Winckler, director at the Bevan Foundation, said: "If the Welsh Government wants to end child poverty it needs to reach families with young children. "Help for school-age pupils like free school meals is making a difference, but it’s time to do more for babies and toddlers." She suggested that the UK Government should increase maternity pay and scrap the two-child benefit cap. The Welsh Government could also provide affordable childcare for under-2s, develop a new baby grant, and seek powers to provide a child payment as in Scotland.Betting Line for Florida-Florida State Shows Clear Favorite

With more and more Chinese players gaining opportunities to showcase their skills on the international stage, we can expect to see even more history being made in the years to come.‘Buy now, pay later’ is more popular than ever. It can cost more than you thinkPenrith halfback Nathan Cleary says he’s ahead of schedule after returning to training on Thursday just five weeks after shoulder surgery, hoping to develop a relationship with new recruit Blaize Talagi as the Panthers plot a path to what would be a staggering fifth-straight NRL premiership. It comes as the 27-year-old revealed the extreme dit measures he is taking while away from partner Mary Fowler on the comeback trail. Talagi, who crossed to the reigning champions from Parramatta, looms as the replacement in the halves for Jarome Luai, the latest in a lengthy line of premiership winners who have left in recent seasons. Both Talagi and superstar Penrith fullback Dylan Edwards have also had shoulder surgery in the off-season, but all could be available for their first game in Las Vegas, with Cleary looking good during Thursday’s session. The four-time premiership winner was with teammates at Nepean Hospital on Friday afternoon spreading Christmas cheer, with the locals stoked to see their main man looking so good just weeks after major surgery to repair a shoulder injury that plagued him in pre-season and ruled him out for a few weeks on the eve of the finals. “It’s pretty much a three or four month recovery so it’s been good so far. I came back to training yesterday (on Thursday) and it’s been good so far,” Cleary told NewsWire. “I’m slowly ticking the boxes and then it’ll start ramping up after Christmas. I’m a little bit ahead of schedule which is cool. “There are a few guys at the club who have come back from shoulder surgery and everyone is doing really well. We’re all progressing well together.” Cleary hasn’t been able to do full contact or major ball work, with the champion playmaker set to spend the pre-season building a relationship with 19-year-old Talagi. But it won’t be a simple swap for Luai, given Cleary and his former five-eighth spent a decade together coming through the junior grades before becoming a dominant pairing in the NRL. They were Batman and Robin for so long that everything felt second nature which is why Cleary doesn’t want to make any bold predictions about Talagi who is battling with Jack Cole for the number six jersey. “I don’t have any expectations at the moment,” he said. “He has come back in really good shape for a guy who had his shoulder done a week after me and he’s absolutely flying. “I’ve been getting to know him these past couple of days. He’s actually my locker neighbour so that’s been nice. “He’s a shy young kid but he’s really willing to learn. If you tell him something then he takes it on board straight away, and he’s a quick learner. “I don’t have any expectations yet, but I played him last season and know that he’s a great player with great talent, but he’s also got a lot to learn. “I just want to get to know him as a person first and help him where I can on the training field. “There’s a long way to go before round one comes around, and there are other guys who are putting their hands up for the number six position. It’s really healthy competition.” Cleary could invite Talagi over for dinner to share a few ideas where the teenager would be treated to sea moss, steaks, scrambled eggs and then some bone broth and more sea moss for dessert. It’s all part of Cleary’s carnivore diet which he turned to while dealing with repeated hamstring injuries which limited him to a career-low 13 matches in 2024. “When I was going through the hammy troubles last year, I wanted to have a clean slate and take a step back to look at everything I was doing,” he revealed. “If there was anything I could do to help me in any way then I’d do it. “The carnivore stuff isn’t full-time. I use it here and there as a bit of a cleanse and then I add fruit and sweet potato back in after that. “I just want to be more conscious of my diet and try to do any little one-percenters that will keep me on the field. “I go through periods where I’m quite disciplined, but after a game I’ll have a little treat here and there to keep a healthy balance. “I’ve been feeling really good, particularly in my gut, with my recovery time and my mental clarity.”

Adams replaced Antonio Sanabria in the 64th minute and made his mark almost immediately. With 70 gone, he spotted the Empoli goalkeeper off his line and lobbed the ball over his head from inside the center circle. The goal ended his personal eight-game drought in spectacular fashion, and will ease pressure on coach Paolo Vanoli. The rapper and fellow content creator was on his platform, and he participated in a segment similar to "Hot Ones" called "Dry Ones." It's also a Q&A and if you decide to not answer the question posed to you, the person has to eat a Popeyes biscuit. At around the 21-minute mark of the YouTube clip below it becomes plaqueboymax's turn to ask DDG a singeing question. After some deliberating, he decides to ask him who his favorite ex was that he actually dated. Immediately, the Michigan native was already imagining the "TikTok clip" coming. But he played along anyway and said that it was someone whose name "starts with a K." He had said that it's been about five years since they last spoke. However, he did admit that they "had a good run." DDG, being in the public eye for a while, read the situation perfectly, because The Shade Room clipped his answer and reshared it on social media. But this has since led to a lot of angry reactions from fans who saw the full stream, and DDG himself. "'Cause we ain't talkin' about family." Plaqueboymax then wanted to clarify, "So favorite ex besides... you know." Of course, they are referring to one Halle Bailey, whom DDG split up from earlier this year. Many fans pointed out this fact in the comments section of The Shade Room 's repost. "The SHADEroom purposely cut out the besides Halle part. Yal really are a BIG part of the problem 🤦🏽‍♀️" one user writes. "Shade room intentionally left off the Halle part bro they really be working overtime to promote drama 😂" another adds. DDG also went off on the media outlet for doing so. "HALLE IS NOT MY EX, SHE IS MY FAMILY, I EXCLUDED HER. I DONT GIVE A 2 F*CKS ABOUT THAT OTHER WOMAN, IM JUST PLAYING THE GAME. THIS IS OUT OF CONTEXT!" Based on the all-caps writing and language used, you can tell he's visibly upset with how this was handled. In hindsight, he might have been better off just eating another biscuit and calling it a day. On the other hand, he did want to play along and provide content for plaqueboymax, so he was really in a sticky situation from the jump. Read More: Will Smith Addresses Diddy “Freak Off” Rumors
