A 67-year-old California woman who once warned others about the dangers of a Keanu Reeves romance scam has now become a victim herself, leading to her becoming homeless after losing thousands. Katherine Goodson's story began in 2022 when she was initially tricked by an individual posing as Reeves, KNSD-TV reported. Goodson explained how she was convinced to send a $500 gift card to the fake Reeves to prove she wasn't interested in his money. She realized it was a scam and blocked him. After posting a warning about it, another profile reached out to Goodson pretending to be Reeves. They claimed they were attempting to console her about the previous scam attempt. The woman fell for it and eventually felt the two were in love. "He wanted to marry me," Goodson said. She is now homeless, living in her car in Vista, California. She shared her story publicly to raise awareness of these scams. "Unfortunately, I wasn't maybe listening to the warning signs," Goodson said. "I don't blame anyone but myself." She ended up sending Bitcoin, gift cards and wire transfers to the imposter over a period of two years, believing she was helping Reeves with supposed financial issues. Danish researchers created a private self-harm network on the social media platform, including fake profiles of people as young as 13 years old, in which they shared 85 pieces of self-harm-related content gradually increasing in severity, including blood, razor blades and encouragement of self-harm. The aim of the study was to test Meta’s claim that it had significantly improved its processes for removing harmful content, which it says now uses artificial intelligence (AI). The tech company claims to remove about 99% of harmful content before it is reported. But Digitalt Ansvar (Digital Accountability), an organisation that promotes responsible digital development, found that in the month-long experiment not a single image was removed. When it created its own simple AI tool to analyse the content, it was able to automatically identify 38% of the self-harm images and 88% of the most severe. This, the company said, shows that Instagram has access to technology able to address the issue but “has chosen not to implement it effectively”. The platform’s inadequate moderation, said Digitalt Ansvar, suggests that it is not complying with EU law. The Digital Services Act requires large digital services to identify systemic risks, including foreseeable negative consequences on physical and mental wellbeing. A Meta spokesperson said: “Content that encourages self-injury is against our policies and we remove this content when we detect it. In the first half of 2024, we removed more than 12m pieces related to suicide and self-injury on Instagram, 99% of which we proactively took down. “Earlier this year, we launched Instagram Teen Accounts , which will place teenagers into the strictest setting of our sensitive content control, so they’re even less likely to be recommended sensitive content and in many cases we hide this content altogether.” The Danish study, however, found that rather than attempt to shut down the self-harm network, Instagram’s algorithm was actively helping it to expand. The research suggested that 13-year-olds become friends with all members of the self-harm group after they were connected with one of its members. This, the study said, “suggests that Instagram’s algorithm actively contributes to the formation and spread of self-harm networks”. Speaking to the Observer , Ask Hesby Holm, chief executive of Digitalt Ansvar, said the company was shocked by the results, having thought that, as the images it shared increased in severity, they would set off alarm bells on the platform. “We thought that when we did this gradually, we would hit the threshold where AI or other tools would recognise or identify these images,” he said. “But big surprise – they didn’t.” He added: “That was worrying because we thought that they had some kind of machinery trying to figure out and identify this content.” Sign up to Observed Analysis and opinion on the week's news and culture brought to you by the best Observer writers after newsletter promotion Failing to moderate self-harm images can result in “severe consequences”, he said. “This is highly associated with suicide. So if there’s nobody flagging or doing anything about these groups, they go unknown to parents, authorities, those who can help support.” Meta, he believes, does not moderate small private groups, such as the one his company created, in order to maintain high traffic and engagement. “We don’t know if they moderate bigger groups, but the problem is self-harming groups are small,” he said. Lotte Rubæk, a leading psychologist who left Meta’s global expert group on suicide prevention in March after accusing it of “turning a blind eye” to harmful Instagram content, said while she was not surprised by the overall findings, she was shocked to see that they did not remove the most explicit content. “I wouldn’t have thought that it would be zero out of 85 posts that they removed,” she said. “I hoped that it would be better. “They have repeatedly said in the media that all the time they are improving their technology and that they have the best engineers in the world. This proves, even though on a small scale, that this is not true.” Rubæk said Meta’s failure to remove images of self-harm from its platforms was “triggering” vulnerable young women and girls to further harm themselves and contributing to rising suicide figures. Since she left the global expert group, she said the situation on the platform has only worsened, the impact of which is plain to see in her patients. The index is on track for its first back-to-back losses in more than three weeks, as momentum slows following a big rally that has it on track for one of its best years of the millennium . The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down by 7 points, or less than 0.1%, with roughly an hour remaining in trading, and the Nasdaq composite fell 0.3%. Tech titan Oracle dragged on the market and sank 7.8% after reporting growth for the latest quarter that fell just short of analysts’ expectations. It was one of the heaviest weights on the S&P 500, even though CEO Safra Catz said the company saw record demand related to artificial-intelligence technology for its cloud infrastructure business, which trains generative AI models. Singh also said Adityanath has set right even hardened criminals and the most crooked people. Singh was addressing a gathering after he and Adityanath inaugurated the two-day Atal Health Fair at Dilkusha lawn here. “In the battle against encephalitis, chief minister Yogi Adityanath has accomplished what I could not during my tenure as Uttar Pradesh chief minister, due to the lack of effective remedies at that time,” Rajnath Singh said after inaugurating the Atal Health Fair. He recalled seeing parents carrying bodies of children in front of the hospital (BRD Medical College) during his student years at Gorakhpur University. “When the BJP’s double-engine government was formed in 2017, the government led by CM Yogi Adityanath worked tirelessly to eliminate encephalitis, with Yogiji personally overseeing the efforts,” said Singh. “Today, the number of children dying from encephalitis in Purvanchal, across Uttar Pradesh and parts of Bihar has become negligible,” he added. He also said 22 AIIMS were approved under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with more than 12 already completed and construction ongoing at four more locations. Furthermore, the number of medical colleges in the country has increased from 387 in 2014 to 780 today, and MBBS seats have risen from 50,000 to 1.20 lakh. The defence minister emphasised that the double-engine BJP government is committed to health welfare. Singh praised Adityanath for launching the fast ambulance service in the state. “The Yogi government has set a new record in increasing the number of medical colleges and seats. Since 2017, with the support of the central government, the state has initiated the construction of 27 medical colleges in different phases,” the defence minister said. “Of these, 14 medical colleges are already functional, while work is going on in 13 others, which will soon be accessible to the public. All of this aligns with the vision of the government led by Yogiji. Shortly, every district in Uttar Pradesh will have its medical college,” Singh added. The defence minister stated that Adityanath has brought special recognition to Uttar Pradesh by positioning it as a leading state. The missing teenager who vanished in waters off NSW’s Central Coast on Christmas Eve has been identified as 15-year-old Luca Bennett. The teenager was playing with two other friends on rocks at North Avoca Beach when they were swept into the water just before 3pm on Tuesday. Two of the teens managed to get to shore safely however Bennett did not, with his friends alerting nearby lifeguards. A multi-agency search for the teenager commenced with the help of the Brisbane Water Police District, Marine Area Command, NSW Ambulance, Surf Life Saving NSW, Marine Rescue NSW and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. The search resumed on Christmas Day, with emergency services crews seen searching near rocks and in the water on jet skis. The NSW Police Airwing was also seen circling the area. Despite the continued search for the teen, tributes have already begun popping up on social media for the talented young basketball player, who travelled to the US last year for a basketball camp. “Man I just saw you last week, it breaks my heart so much, 2025 was gonna big,” one friend wrote. “Had I known last week would be the last time I see you I would’ve embraced you. “My brother, I will see you again. I love you, I’ll always be here for your family, no matter what.” Another wrote: “Miss ya legend”. Trump has repeatedly threatened to use tariffs to achieve his geopolitical goals. ”The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Saturday. Trump went on to say that he would ask the BRICS nations to promise not to create a common currency, “nor back any other currency to replace the mighty US dollar,” or they will face 100% tariffs. ”They can go find another ‘sucker!’” he continued. “There is no chance that the BRICS will replace the US Dollar in International Trade, and any Country that tries should wave goodbye to America.” BRICS previously comprised Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, and was expanded in January to include Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. Around 30 other nations have expressed interest in joining the group of emerging economies. Russia, which currently holds the group’s rotating presidency, floated the idea of introducing a BRICS currency in 2022. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva echoed Moscow’s proposal last year, arguing that having the option of trading in another reserve currency would reduce the BRICS countries’ “vulnerability” to fluctuations in the dollar’s exchange rate. BRICS leaders stopped short of announcing plans for such a currency at their summit in the Russian city of Kazan last month. Instead, the group pledged to set up a cross-border payment system to function alongside the Western SWIFT network, and to increase their use of local currencies in international trade. ”Cooperation within BRICS is not directed against anyone or anything – neither against the dollar nor against other currencies,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated in October. “It pursues the main goal of ensuring the interests of those countries that participate in this format.” Using local currencies to settle bilateral trade bills “helps to keep economic development free from politics,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the time. When Sherry answered the door two weeks ago and found a hand delivered income assistance cheque from the province she felt she had won the lottery. Like many affected by the Canada Post job action that stretches across the nation, the Nelson resident was planning for life without the monthly cheque and scrambling to make other arrangements to provide for her and her eight-year-old daughter’s needs in the face of a stalemate in contract negotiations between Canada Post and CUPW. But Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction (SDPR) staff, including community integration specialists, were delivering cheques to vulnerable populations who are unable to sign up for direct deposit or attend an office. “I really don’t know what I would have done if that cheque had not been delivered,” she said, her real name being withheld by request. Like Sherry, thousands of families in Nelson and across B.C. rely on assistance to meet their basic needs, to pay for food and rent each month, but don’t have direct deposit set up to receive the cheques automatically. So when the job action began three weeks ago it put people like Sherry into a bind. Income and disability assistance payments are necessary for many people in the province and cause additional challenges when there are delays, even though the SDPR said 85 per cent of people receive their monthly payments through direct deposit already — which means they received their payments on schedule despite the strike. Last week the B.C. Ombudsperson issued a statement saying it was investigating the province for “ineffective” distribution of income and disability assistance clients during the current Canada Post strike. The Ombudsperson claimed around 40 per cent of the ministry cheques had not been delivered in the Nelson region and across the province — to vulnerable Nelsonites during the Canada Post strike — and began the investigation. But cheques that aren’t being directly deposited are being mailed to the closest ministry or Services B.C. office for pick up. And as of Nov. 30, 98 per cent of the ministry’s November payments have been distributed. The ministry noted there are people who leave the system every month without notifying the ministry — whether they find employment, move to another province, or become deceased — and make up the remaining two per cent of cheques. “This is the normal monthly amount of cheques being distributed every month, considering the regular flow of people in and out of provincial assistance,” the ministry noted in an email to Castanet (Nelson). “For the small amount of the remaining cheques the ministry has attempted to connect with clients to arrange for distribution ... to get assistance cheques to people who cannot use direct deposit, including hand delivery by ministry staff and couriers in some situations.” With no resolution in sight for the contract negotiations, the SDPR said staff are available to help people in need to sign up for direct deposit to avoid any future delays. "The ministry is prepared for the Dec.18 cheque date should there be a need to manually distribute cheques normally delivered by Canada Post,” the ministry spokesperson said. Ball felt discomfort in his calf after Wednesday night’s loss to the Miami Heat and did not play against the New York Knicks on Friday. The team said he will be reevaluated on Dec. 11, which is two weeks from the date of the original injury. Ball has been hot for the Hornets, averaging 40.3 points in his last four games. He is averaging a career-best 31.1 points and 4.7 3-pointers per game for the season, which ranks second in the NBA. He also is averaging 5.4 rebounds, 6.9 assists and 1.1 steals in 18 starts. Ball has had a history of injury problems, mostly to his ankles, since coming to the league as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft. The only Hornets player to ever receive a max contract extension, Ball has played in just 202 games with 182 starts in five seasons. The team also said guard Tre Mann’s lower back soreness has been diagnosed as a disk irritation. His absence from the lineup began on Nov. 23 against Milwaukee. MONTREAL — Montreal Canadiens defenceman Mike Matheson was not available for Tuesday's game against the Utah Hockey Club due to a lower-body injury. The Canadiens announced his injury half an hour before puck drop. Jayden Struble took his place in the lineup as Montreal (7-11-2) faced Utah (8-10-3) for the first time. Matheson participated in the morning skate but missed practice on Monday. The 30-year-old from nearby Pointe-Claire, Que., leads all Montreal blueliners with 13 points (one goal, 12 assists) in 20 games as the lone defenceman on the team's top power-play unit.
