Former Democratic presidential candidate and author Marianne Williamson launched a bid to become chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee on Thursday, joining a crowded field of candidates attempting to “make things right” for the party after its election losses last month. “MAGA is a distinctly 21st century political movement and it will not be defeated by a 20th century tool kit. Data analysis, fundraising, field organizing, and beefed-up technology — while all are important — will not be enough to prepare the way for Democratic victory in 2024 and beyond. That’s why I have decided to run for DNC Chair this year,” Williamson wrote in a post on her Substack on Thursday morning. Williamson ran for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination in 2020 and 2024. In 2020, she suspended her primary campaign before the Iowa Democratic caucus, but in 2024, Williamson ran and suspended her long-shot bid before unsuspending it and remaining in the race for the nomination. The 72-year-old said her time on the campaign trail has prepared her for the role after speaking with Democratic voters about what they’d like to see from the party. “I’ve traveled extensively throughout this country, and I’ve seen how much pain there is out there,” she said. “I’ve been up close and personal with people who didn’t have healthcare, who couldn’t survive on just one job, who were so depressed about so many of the conditions in their lives that were, in fact, at least indirectly due to bad public policy, and too many of them didn’t feel like the Democratic Party had their back.” However, Williamson has a tenuous relationship with the DNC, previously knocking the committee for not encouraging a competitive primary process in 2024 even as concerns over President Joe Biden ‘s age and mental acuity grew. Williamson is the latest candidate to enter the race to succeed outgoing DNC Chairman Jaime Harrison. She joins Minnesota Democratic Party Chairman Ken Martin, former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, New York state Sen. James Skoufis, former Maryland Senate candidate Robert Houton, Wisconsin Party Chairman Ben Wikler, and former Homeland Security official Nate Snyder. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER The leadership elections for the DNC are slated to take place on Feb. 2 during the party’s winter meeting at National Harbor, Maryland. The change in leadership comes as candidates running for the position say they need to learn what went wrong for the party in 2024. “We need to know what it was that made people feel that their wallets were more important than their pain. We need to understand what it is that has made people emotionally and psychologically disconnect from a sense that the Democratic Party was part of a great legacy in American history,” Williamson said in her video.
An elderly activist suffered two broken ribs when a businessman eating lunch nearby purportedly got “annoyed” with the noise he was making and allegedly assaulted him. Andrew Hay, 63, founder of financial advice company Apex Advice, was arrested for allegedly assaulting Deno Stock, 73, an animal rights advocate, as the Aucklander protested against the Melbourne Cup outside the downtown Ferry Building. Dramatic video footage captured the moment Hay launched at Stock and other protesters on November 5, showing Stock falling to the ground and bystanders rushing in to calm Hay. Stock told the Herald he was used to people jeering at him as he demonstrates, but said Hay’s “vicious attack” caught him by surprise and he believed the physical altercation was unfair as “we were doing everything legal”.

Notre Dame announced before the game that Cross was ruled out for the game, as was sophomore wide receiver KK Smith . Cross was injured in the 52-3 victory over Florida State and he missed last week's 35-14 win over Virginia. Head coach Marcus Freeman said Cross was questionable early in the week, but the team has made the decision that the standout defensive tackle would not play in the game. The sixth-year senior defensive tackle is second on the defense with 5.5 tackles for loss and second on the defense with sacks (4.0). He was playing his best football of the season when he went down early in the victory over the Seminoles. With Cross out the Irish will once again turn to junior Donovan Hinish , who has been a key reserve all season. Hinish has 23 tackles and is third on the defense with 3.5 sacks, and he comes into this game playing outstanding football. Hinish stepped into the lineup when Cross went down against Florida State and proceeded to rack up two sacks in the win. He had another sack in last week's win over Virginia, giving the Pittsburgh native three sacks in two games since Cross went down. Army is a different animal than what Notre Dame faced against Florida State and Virginia. The Black Knights lead the nation in rushing at 334.9 yards per game, which is 72.1 yards ahead of the No. 2 ranked rushing team (UCF). Army also ranked third nationally in yards per carry and fourth in rushing touchdowns. Israel launches new strikes on Lebanon as leaders draw closer to ceasefire with Hezbollah
Azerbaijani and US officials believe a Russian surface-to-air missile caused the deadly crash of an Azerbaijani passenger jet, media reports and a US official said Thursday, as the Kremlin cautioned against "hypotheses" over the disaster. The Azerbaijan Airlines jet crashed near the Kazakh city of Aktau, an oil and gas hub, on Wednesday after going off course for undetermined reasons. Thirty-eight of the 67 people on board died. The Embraer 190 aircraft was supposed to fly northwest from the Azerbaijani capital Baku to the city of Grozny in Chechnya, southern Russia, but instead diverted far off course across the Caspian Sea. An investigation is underway, with pro-government Azerbaijani website Caliber citing unnamed officials as saying they believed a Russian missile fired from a Pantsir-S air defence system downed the plane. The claim was also reported by The New York Times, broadcaster Euronews and the Turkish news agency Anadolu. Some aviation and military experts said the plane might have been accidentally shot by Russian air defence systems because it was flying in an area where Ukrainian drone activity had been reported. A former expert at France's BEA air accident investigation agency said there appeared to be "a lot of shrapnel" damage on the wreckage. Speaking on condition of anonymity, he said the damage was "reminiscent" of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, which was downed with a surface-to-air missile by Russia-backed rebels over eastern Ukraine in 2014. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters: "It would be wrong to make any hypotheses before the investigation's conclusions." Euronews cited Azerbaijani government sources as saying that "shrapnel hit the passengers and cabin crew as it exploded next to the aircraft mid-flight". A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, also said early indications suggested a Russian anti-aircraft system struck the plane. Kazakhstan news agency Kazinform cited a regional prosecutor as saying that two black-box flight recorders had been recovered. Azerbaijan Airlines initially said the plane flew through a flock of birds, before withdrawing the statement. Kazakh officials said 38 people had been killed and there were 29 survivors, including three children. Jalil Aliyev, the father of flight attendant Hokume Aliyeva, told AFP that this was supposed to have been her last flight before starting a job as a lawyer for the airline. "Why did her young life have to end so tragically?" the man said in a trembling voice before hanging up the phone. Eleven of the injured are in intensive care, the Kazakh health ministry said. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev declared Thursday a day of mourning and cancelled a planned visit to Russia for an informal summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), a grouping of former Soviet nations. "I extend my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the crash... and wish a speedy recovery to the injured," Aliyev said in a social media post Wednesday. The Flight Radar website showed the plane deviating from its normal route, crossing the Caspian Sea and then circling over the area where it eventually crashed near Aktau, on the eastern shore of the sea. Kazakhstan said the plane was carrying 37 Azerbaijani passengers, six Kazakhs, three Kyrgyz and 16 Russians. A Kazakh woman told the local branch of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) she was near where the plane crashed and rushed to the site to help survivors. "They were covered in blood. They were crying. They were calling for help," said the woman, who gave her name as Elmira. She said they saved some teenagers. "I'll never forget their look, full of pain and despair," said Elmira. "A girl pleaded: 'Save my mother, my mother is back there'." Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation with Aliyev and "expressed his condolences in connection with the crash", Peskov told a news conference. bur/rlp/jsAre We Ignoring the Mental Health Crisis of Persons with Disabilities?
