G ood morning, Barbados. It’s once again, that time of year where we celebrate the joy and love of this special season. This is a time that means so many things to so many people, not just here in our country, but across our diaspora and indeed, the world. So, whether you’re at home or whether you’re abroad, whether you’re with friends or family, loved ones or not, regardless of your circumstances, on behalf of the Government and people of Barbados, I say a very merry and blessed Christmas. You will realise that my voice is not the best, but I felt that it was still important to be able to share with you today. We celebrate this beautiful Christmas Day as one Bajan family, and I’m so happy to know that the love we share and feel during this time is something truly special. As we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and the Spirit of Christmas fills our hearts, I want to take a moment to reflect, to celebrate and to share with each of you the hope and warmth that this season brings. You Might Be Interested In Shoring up good ideas I resolve to... Wellness for life: The importance of self-care Indeed, I know this year 2024 has been one filled with a unique blend of transformation, tension and resilience. We have faced challenges that have stretched us beyond what we thought possible. We have encountered challenges that have tested our unity, our faith and our strength. But through it all, we stood together as Bajans, embodying the spirit of perseverance that runs through our veins and that has indeed carried us through generations. As we pause during this Christmas season, let us remember that the true essence of this time of year is not found in the decorations or the gifts under the tree, but yes, in the love that binds us together, the love of family, the love of community and the love of country. This Christmas, I encourage each of you to cherish those closest to you. In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it is easy to lose sight of what truly matters, but the moments we spend with our families, sharing a food and a drink, laughing, reminiscing or simply enjoying each other’s presence, are the moments that give life truly its meaning. These are the moments that fill our hearts with warmth and remind us of the blessings we hold dear. And for those who may be spending this Christmas missing loved ones who are no longer with us, let us acknowledge your strength. In your memories, their love lives on, in your hearts, they remain forever present. May the comfort of cherished memories give you peace, and may you know that you are never alone, for this nation stands with you always. To our Barbadians abroad, I know that Christmas is a time when your hearts long to be home, to walk the familiar roads, to hear the sounds of Christmas morning in Barbados, to feel the changes in the wind and the breeze, to taste the sweet bread and the sorrel and to feel the warmth that you get in family gatherings, even if you cannot be home physically this year, know that you’re always home in our hearts. And the beauty of technology allows us to communicate with you and for you to be present, except we can’t hug and kiss you, but we can do everything else through that technology. So, my friends, Barbados carries you with us, just as you carry Barbados with you wherever you are in the world, your roots are deep, your connections strong, and your contributions to our nation’s story are invaluable. As we celebrate this season of love and reflection, I extend a heartfelt invitation to you all. In 2025 come home, come home for We Gathering , or as the jingle says, “Come long home”. This special, year-long festival calls on every Bajan from near and far to return to our island and reconnect with your families, reconnect with the land, the culture and the other people who helped raise you and made us who we are as a people. We Gathering is not just a festival, my friends, it is a celebration of us, us Bajans. It is a time to honour our achievements, to share our stories and to look boldly towards the future that we are building together. Imagine a year where every parish comes alive from January to November, and then in December, we bring everybody together, ensuring that the vibrancy of our culture is there. In every village, in every community, there is laughter and conversations of reunited families and old friends. Yes, We Gathering 2025 will be a time to deepen our bonds, to learn from each other and to revel in the joy of being Bajan. So, wherever you are in the world, start making your plans. Barbados is calling you home. And may I say, having started it in 2020, and COVID put us off our tracks. This is the Barbadian spirit that says we will not allow ourselves ever to be dominated by circumstances. We’re going to do this one more time and get to the end. But as we look back on 2024, we can see that it was a year of challenges, as I said, but also a year of incredible progress and unity. We faced economic pressures, we navigated global uncertainties, and we stood resilient in the face of the Climate Crisis. More people are working, more people are earning, and indeed, through every test, our determination shone bright, no more so than when we also confronted the ravages of Hurricane Beryl. We have invested, my friends, in our future. We are transforming our institutions with your help, and we have held fast to our belief in the promise of this, our great nation. My friends, the road ahead will not always be easy, but we know that together, we can always be capable of achieving greatness. That has been our story in the past, it will be our story in the future. Barbados has always been able to count on the strength of its community and its families and of its faith in each other. This Christmas, I want us to renew that faith. Let us look to our future with hope, knowing that as long as we stand together, there is no challenge we cannot overcome, and no dream we cannot achieve the faith that we have in the God that we believe is absolutely critical to rooting us, especially more so in these times when the pace of change is so rapid that it can sometimes be giddying. As we gather around our tables this holiday season, let us hold close therefore to the values that define us; love and kindness and respect and resilience. Let us also remember the beacons of renewal that we’re asking each of us to instil in each other. Reach out to your neighbours, check on those who may be alone, and spread the warmth and generosity that are the hallmarks of this special season. For it is in the giving of ourselves that we experience the true joy of Christmas. May this season, my friends, fill your homes with peace, your hearts with joy, and your lives with love. And may 2025 bring continued blessings, opportunities and the promise of brighter days for us all. And where there are challenges, may we build the resilience to overcome them. I simply say to you, on this morning, Merry Christmas to you, your families, your friends, and may God continue to bless Barbados and to bless us its people. Thank you. Have a wonderful day, and don’t overdo.Experts shed light on what new PTI move would mean for economy KARACHI: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) plans to initiate a civil disobedience movement, encouraging overseas Pakistanis to limit their remittances, could hurt the economy, say experts. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned since August 2023 on multiple charges, has threatened to launch a nationwide civil disobedience campaign from December 14 if party demands are not met. As part of this movement, overseas Pakistanis will be encouraged to reduce their remittances and participate in a boycott campaign. “If the PTI launches a civil disobedience movement, it could have serious consequences for Pakistan’s economy. Remittances, which bring in over $30 billion annually, might drop if people are encouraged to use informal channels like hawala instead of official banking systems,” said Saad Hanif, head of research at Ismail Iqbal Securities. “Political instability might scare off investors, weaken the rupee further, and drive up inflation, making life harder for ordinary people. Overall, it could disrupt the government’s plans and push the economy deeper into crisis,” he added. Awais Ashraf, director research at AKD Securities Limited, does not believe that potential civil disobedience will significantly impact remittance flows, as people send this money to support their families and some flows are earnings of freelancers. Remittances to Pakistan have increased to $11.8 billion in July-October FY25, up 34.7 per cent from the same period last year, providing crucial support to the external account. Both the government and the central bank anticipate that remittances will reach historic levels of $35 billion in FY25, averaging $2.9 billion per month so far. These significant inflows will strengthen the reserves, offering a much-needed boost to the economy. A senior banker said that we need to observe how Pakistani expatriates respond to the planned call. In reality, Pakistan regularly receives significant remittance inflows from its migrants working abroad, most of whom belong to the lower and middle classes and typically engage in blue-collar jobs in Gulf countries, particularly Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, he said. However, the expatriates who may have acquired nationality in their host countries often send funds back home during occasions such as Eid festivals, for Hajj, for charity, and for making investments in Pakistan. Khan’s latest announcement comes at a time when the nation’s struggling economy is on the mend, largely thanks to a bailout from the International Monetary Fund. As a result, inflation has decreased, dropping to 4.9 per cent in November. The current account balance shifted to a surplus of $218 million in the first four months of the fiscal year 2025, compared to a deficit of $1.528 billion in the same period last year. As of November, the foreign exchange reserves held by the State Bank of Pakistan amounted to $12 billion, which is sufficient to cover more than two months of imports. Interest rates have also fallen, decreasing by 700 basis points to 15 per cent since June. Moreover, Pakistan’s benchmark stock index has performed well, surpassing 100,000 points. If the economy suffers as a result of the political unrest, the IT industry, which is already suffering from slow speed, is likely to experience more difficulties. The consistent internet disruptions and its slow speed are detrimental to the national economy in general and IT sector in particular, which will further affect adversely the economic activities and damage the reputation of the country if the situation persists, said Saad Shah, an IT exporter. As far as the IT sector is concerned, various IT companies are facing challenges to complete their projects on time despite their multiple efforts of working extra hours due to the prevailing internet situation. Large IT companies having annual contracts with local and foreign clients may survive through managing their work from offshore offices, but medium and small players including freelancers could not have options but to lose projects and clients, Shah added Hanif also expressed that “[civil disobedience] would reduce the country’s foreign exchange reserves. The government could also struggle to collect taxes and utility bills, worsening its financial problems and delaying important projects,” Hanif said. In a message posted on X, Khan announced the formation of a five-member negotiation team. This team is tasked with discussing two key demands with the government: the release of under-trial prisoners and the establishment of a judicial commission to investigate the incidents that occurred on May 9, 2023 and November 26, 2024 -- dates that saw significant protests from Khan’s supporters, which were met with a crackdown from the government and security forces.

Germany’s economy is in deep trouble, and Volkswagen is the poster boy. VW shares are down about 67% from their 2021 peak. Earnings are down 66% over the last year. And this week 70,000 German VW workers walked off the job. They’re furious over plant closures, layoffs, and salary cuts. So, what’s the root cause of VW’s woes? For the last few years, VW has been shifting production to electric vehicles (EVs). This is largely due to EU mandates requiring all cars to be electric by 2035. At first, the government heavily subsidized EVs. And sales jumped. But now the honeymoon is over. Let’s just say the transition to “net zero” in Europe is not going well. First of all, there’s not enough energy in the grid to charge all those batteries. And the little electricity available is very expensive. Electric autos are proving to be far more expensive from start to finish. I found a comment worth sharing from one angry German reader on the Daily Mail’s coverage of the VW strike. I live in Berlin. I would estimate 90% of people here live in flats without designated parking places. Does the government seriously expect to provide fast chargers on the streets for these 90%? They just cannot admit they are wrong. EV is fine if you have a garage, but if you live in a flat forget it. The reader makes an excellent point. Most people have no place to charge an EV. Even if there was enough energy, they’d have to leave charging cables all over the roads. That copper would disappear quickly. This is one of a dozen major flaws with the mandates. The EU technocrats who pushed these policies did zero real planning. It’s just a pipe dream. They literally saw how well Tesla was doing and said to themselves “We should make everyone do that.” This was the extent of their analysis. Nord Stream and Nuclear Germany’s move into electric vehicles is only their latest stumble when it comes to energy policy. They are also shuttering all their nuclear power plants. And they stood by passively while somebody blew up the Nord Stream gas pipeline from Russia. And even though one of the lines of Nord Stream is still operable, they aren’t utilizing it. There’s dirt cheap natural gas available and they’re choosing to buy imported liquified gas which costs 4x as much. As a result, energy prices have soared. Now Germany plans to rely on solar and wind in a country with little sun and inconsistent wind. Oh yeah, they’re also relying on “green hydrogen” to power their industrial economy (spoiler alert: this will also fail). These missteps have been devastating to Germany’s industrial base. Source: Convera, Macrobond Germany is supposed to be the economic engine of Europe. And it was, until 2018. Then the climate mandates and “net zero” rules started rolling in, and it’s been straight downhill since. Lessons Learned German workers and citizens appear to be waking up to the scam. The vast majority of people don’t want EVs, and they’re becoming loud about it. A massive political shift is underway throughout Europe. The EU mandate to ban all gas-powered cars by 2035 is doomed. Regulators are already discussing allowing hybrid vehicles, and they will eventually cave on traditional combustion engines as well. The goals are utterly impossible. This type of government intervention never goes well. EVs were already growing, finding their own path to realistic adoption levels. Then EU technocrats got involved and spoiled the entire economy. You can’t force industries to do what you want. That should be the lesson here. Here in the U.S., we’re experiencing our own awakening. President Trump and his team are set to shake things up across the board. De-regulation, energy expansion, and bringing manufacturing home. In the States at least, the awakening extends far beyond economic issues. As Elon Musk recently posted on X , “Cancel culture has been canceled”. So free speech is making a comeback, too. And across the world, people are also pushing back against lax immigration policies. It’s an exciting time. We’ve been on the wrong path for so long, and it seems that’s finally changing. Who knows, maybe the EU will eventually become investable again. For now, I will continue to avoid the continent, but let’s see what happens over the next few years.

Makkah, a city that sees millions of visitors every year, quietly holds a piece of Hyderabad ’s history that often goes unnoticed. Nestled in the heart of this busy city is the Nizam’s Rubath, a legacy that dates back centuries. Established with the purpose of providing free accommodation for pilgrims traveling from the Deccan region, the Rubath has long been a symbol of Hyderabadi hospitality and philanthropy. Its origins, deeply rooted in the vision of the Nizams, reflect their commitment to supporting their people on this holy journey. The Rubath Nizam Hyderabad in Makkah traces its origins to the mid-19th century during the reign of Afzal-ud-Daula, Asaf Jah V. Recognizing the challenges faced by pilgrims journeying from Hyderabad and surrounding regions to Makkah, the Nizam decided to create a sanctuary for them. While there is no historical evidence to support the number, legend has it that Afzal-ud-Daula established 42 Rubath buildings in 1860 to provide instant relief to those who faced long journeys. Notably, at that time Saudi Arabia was undergoing a financial crisis, as the country had yet to discover the oil reserves that would later transform its economy. The government was struggling to provide adequate facilities to the influx of pilgrims arriving for Hajj. The Nizam’s Rubath proved to be an invaluable resource, offering refuge and much-needed comfort to not only Hyderabadis but visitors from Marathwada and Karnataka. To ensure easy access to the Kaaba, the Rubath was strategically established near the haram. Over time, the Rubath only grew in importance and became a significant symbol of Hyderabad’s connection to Makkah. The Nizam’s Rubath in Makkah today is a blend of tradition and modernity. It continues to be a cornerstone for pilgrims during the Hajj pilgrimage. However, with the expansion of Makkah’s Grand Mosque and urban development, the number of Rubath buildings has significantly decreased and relocated further from the mosque. Today, only three buildings remain with a total capacity of about 1,200 people. Due to the shortage of accommodation, every year a limited number of Hajj pilgrims are selected through a draw. While the property provides modern-day amenities like air conditioning, free WiFi, free laundry, and much more, visitors remain unsatisfied. Speaking to Siasat.com , a doctor from Hyderabad said, “I stayed in the Nizam’s Rubath in Ramadan this year and the management was subpar with issues like maintenance. Though the facilities are decent, they do not reflect the kind of standard one might expect from such an iconic institution.” Another challenge facing Nizam’s Rubath is the expansion of the hospitality industry in Makkah. Despite offering free or subsidized accommodation, Hyderabadi visitors are opting for private hotels that provide better proximity to the Haram, shuttle services, and buffet options, which the Rubath struggles to match. Additionally, online booking platforms have made it easier for pilgrims to secure accommodations tailored to their needs, further reducing reliance on the Rubath. For a young Ruqia Fatima, comfort is the most important when choosing a hotel. “It is fascinating to learn about the Rubath’s history but the practicality of choosing a hotel closer to the Kaaba with better services makes it more appealing which is why I did not opt for the Rubath for my Umrah trip. The lack of information and reviews about the Rubath online also influenced my choice,” she says. It is to be noted that, despite these trends, the Rubath continues to serve as a symbol of Hyderabad’s enduring legacy in Makkah, reflecting a tradition of hospitality that has spanned over a century.HNB General Insurance secures top honours at SLIM National Sales Awards 2024

Trump Pulls a 180 on Jimmy Carter Now That He’s DeadThomas uses big drives and putts to hold lead in BahamasNASSAU, Bahamas — Justin Thomas was long off the tee and made a few long putts on the back nine to overtake Scottie Scheffler with a 6-under 66 and build a one-shot lead Saturday over golf's best player going into the final round of the Hero World Challenge. Thomas is trying out a 46-inch driver — a little more than an inch longer than normal — that he previously used for practice at home to gain speed and length. He blasted a 361-yard drive to 8 feet on the par-4 seventh hole and led the field in driving distance. But it was a few long putts that put him ahead of Scheffler, who had a 69. Thomas was on the verge of falling two shots behind when he made an 18-foot par putt on the par-3 12th hole. On the reachable par-4 14th, he was in a nasty spot in a sandy area and could only splash it out to nearly 50 feet. He made that one for a most unlikely birdie, while behind him Scheffler muffed a chip on the 13th hole and made his lone bogey of a windy day. Scheffler never caught up to him, missing birdie chances on the reachable 14th and the par-5 15th. Thomas hit his approach to 3 feet for birdie on the 16th after a 343-yard drive. Scheffler made an 18-foot birdie putt on the 16th to close within one. Scheffler missed birdie chances on the last two holes from the 10-foot and 15-foot range, while Thomas missed an 8-foot birdie attempt at the last. "I had a stretch at 13, 14, 15 where I felt like I lost a shot or two there, but outside of that I did a lot of really good things today," Scheffler said. Thomas hasn't won since the 2022 PGA Championship at Southern Hills, and a victory at Albany Golf Club wouldn't count as an official win. But the two-time major champion has made steady progress toward getting his game back in order. "I'm driving it great. I've had a lot of confidence with it," Thomas said of his longer driver. "I feel like I've been able to put myself in some pretty good spots going into the green. I'm still not taking advantage of some of them as much as I would like, but that's golf and we're always going to say that." Thomas was at 17-under 199 and will be in the final group Sunday with Scheffler, who is trying to end his spectacular season with a ninth title. Tom Kim put himself in the mix, which he might not have imagined Thursday when he was 3 over through six holes of the holiday tournament. Kim got back in the game with a 65 on Friday, and then followed with 12 birdies for a 62. He had a shot at the course record — Rickie Fowler shot 61 in the final round when he won at Albany in 2017 — until Kim found a bunker and took two shots to reach the green in making a double bogey on the par-3 17th. Even so, he was only two shots behind. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley (68) was four back. "Feel like I've been seeing signs of improvement, which is what you want and that's all I can do," Thomas said. "I can't control everybody else or what's going on, I've just got to keep playing as good as I possibly can and hope that it's enough come Sunday." Get local news delivered to your inbox!

Jimmy Carter, who served one term as the 39th U.S. President, died on Dec. 29. He was 100. Statements were issued Sunday evening by members of New Hampshire Congressional delegation, including U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and U.S. Congressman Chris Pappas. Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter Jr.), 39th President of the United States, was born October 1, 1924, in the small farming town of Plains, Georgia, and grew up in the nearby community of Archery. His father, James Earl Carter Sr., was a farmer and businessman; his mother, Lillian Gordy Carter, a registered nurse. He was educated in the public school of Plains, attended Georgia Southwestern College and the Georgia Institute of Technology, and received a B.S. degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1946. In the Navy he became a submariner, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets and rising to the rank of lieutenant. Chosen by Admiral Hyman Rickover for the nuclear submarine program, he was assigned to Schenectady, New York, where he took graduate work at Union College in reactor technology and nuclear physics and served as senior officer of the pre-commissioning crew of the Seawolf , the second nuclear submarine. On July 7, 1946, he married Rosalynn Smith of Plains. When his father died in 1953, he resigned his naval commission and returned with his family to Georgia. He took over the Carter farms, and he and Rosalynn operated Carter’s Warehouse, a general-purpose seed and farm supply company in Plains. He quickly became a leader of the community, serving on county boards supervising education, the hospital authority, and the library. In 1962 he won election to the Georgia Senate. He lost his first gubernatorial campaign in 1966, but won the next election, becoming Georgia’s 76th governor on January 12, 1971. He was the Democratic National Committee campaign chairman for the 1974 congressional and gubernatorial elections. On December 12, 1974, he announced his candidacy for president of the United States. He won his party’s nomination on the first ballot at the 1976 Democratic National Convention, and was elected president on November 2, 1976. Jimmy Carter served as president from January 20, 1977 to January 20, 1981. Significant foreign policy accomplishments of his administration included the Panama Canal treaties, the Camp David Accords, the treaty of peace between Egypt and Israel, the SALT II treaty with the Soviet Union, and the establishment of U.S. diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China. He championed human rights throughout the world. On the domestic side, the administration’s achievements included a comprehensive energy program conducted by a new Department of Energy; deregulation in energy, transportation, communications, and finance; major educational programs under a new Department of Education; and major environmental protection legislation, including the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. In 1982, he became University Distinguished Professor at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and founded The Carter Center. Actively guided by President Carter, the nonpartisan and nonprofit Center addresses national and international issues of public policy. Carter Center staff and associates join with President Carter in efforts to resolve conflict, promote democracy, protect human rights, and prevent disease and other afflictions. The Center has spearheaded the international effort to eradicate Guinea worm disease, which is poised to be the second human disease in history to be eradicated. The permanent facilities of The Carter Presidential Center were dedicated in October 1986, and include the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum, administered by the National Archives . Also open to visitors is the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site in Plains, administered by the National Park Service. According to his official White House biography , Carter could point to a number of achievements in domestic affairs. He dealt with the energy shortage by establishing a national energy policy and by decontrolling domestic petroleum prices to stimulate production. He prompted Government efficiency through civil service reform and proceeded with deregulation of the trucking and airline industries. He sought to improve the environment. His expansion of the national park system included protection of 103 million acres of Alaskan lands. To increase human and social services, he created the Department of Education, bolstered the Social Security system, and appointed record numbers of women, blacks, and Hispanics to Government jobs. In foreign affairs, Carter set his own style. His championing of human rights was coldly received by the Soviet Union and some other nations. In the Middle East, through the Camp David agreement of 1978, he helped bring amity between Egypt and Israel. He succeeded in obtaining ratification of the Panama Canal treaties. Building upon the work of predecessors, he established full diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China and completed negotiation of the SALT II nuclear limitation treaty with the Soviet Union. There were serious setbacks, however. The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan caused the suspension of plans for ratification of the SALT II pact. The seizure as hostages of the U. S. embassy staff in Iran dominated the news during the last 14 months of the administration. The consequences of Iran’s holding Americans captive, together with continuing inflation at home, contributed to Carter’s defeat in 1980. Even then, he continued the difficult negotiations over the hostages. Iran finally released the 52 Americans the same day Carter left office. The Carters have three sons, one daughter, nine grandsons (one deceased), three granddaughters, five great-grandsons, and eight great-granddaughters. On December 10, 2002, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2002 to Mr. Carter “for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.” Information included from jimmycarterlibrary.gov and whitehouse.gov Subscribe to receive your free daily eNews + a note from the Ink Link publisher .
